So, while we're waiting for the Autumn OLDC to get ready, I'd like to introduce you to a level that was meant to be my submission to the contest, but had to bow out for being way too big for it's own good, Boom's Zoo of Doom.

srb20008.png

Yeah, it's set in the Sonic Boom universe I guess, so a reason to get ol' Bandages ready for action. Not that the level's made with him in mind, but y'know...
https://mb.srb2.org/showthread.php?t=48533

So the title refers to 3 phases of the level.
Boom is a Hub esque area, recreating Hedgehog town to a degree. (Altough I looked closer to the Archie comics, since I don't like the washed out look of the cartoon)

srb20010.png

Then we enter the Zoo, a perfectly safe place of family entertainment organized by Dr. Eggman. He even prepared some special VIP area's for his furry friends.

srb20015.png

And then we reach doom, where...Well, you'll find out. Let's just say the open Hub area's are swapped for more gameplay heavy area's.

So, this level is an unholy amalgamation of several elements playing at the same time.

I wanted to figure out how to do storytelling within the level so I wouldn't have to rely on cutscenes in Sol Sestancia 2. So this is a testground for that.

Besides that, a fan of mine suggested I'd have a take on the Aquarium park from Colors. But adding a Zoo and Jurassic Park element to it. I liked the idea, but tonally it felt out of place for Sol Sestancia, so now it's a stand alone level.

srb20019.png

On top of that, I promised I'd make a new Sonic Boom cartoon this year, but I never got to it. So now I clumsily turned this level into a Sonic Boom episode. Kind of. Heh. A little more intense then what the show would ever be, but hey, I like spicing up Sonic Boom. The show's always too low energy for my taste.

But yeah, had to cut the level up in 2 acts to keep it stable. And with all the added sound and music, no way I could keep this within the 3 mb limit for OLDC.

Hence this chaotic level. Well, hope you enjoy then.
If you want a more straight forward adaptation of Aquarium Park...Well, stay tuned.

This is bad.

Here's how to fix it:
  • Select sectors

  • Give them Sector Special 13

And voila!

Unfortunately I couldn't understand a lot of the voice lines so I don't understand what happened at the end.

Update version 2

srb20021.png

Okay, followed Kwiin's advice and fixed the stairs.

Sorry Icy Dragon, I'll try and figure out how to do subtitles by stealing fro, err, studying what the recent Sonic 06 mod did. Altough I had terrible luck with getting sprites to work so far.

Anyway, biggest addition to version 2 is a third map, Hedgehog village.
It's basically an expanded version of map 1 with the Zoo removed but more streets and buildings for the village added and the level design opened up a bit.
Made it since some people asked me to do a Hangout map, but I can't can get that code to work. So it functions as a bonus Emerald hunt level instead, I guess.

Mod doesnt work. Everytime i load it in, it crashes once i get to a specific point. The place where it mostly crashes on me: near sticks garden. This is probably because im on mobile, but could you fix this?

Hmm, works for me, even on Android, don't know what the problem is.
Map 1 has always been extremely unstable tough, sigh.

Anyway, I made a temporary version 3 where I rendered the first map with a different Node, the only "magic trick" I know that could possibly fix it, but I can't test if it works because I never had the original problem.

So let me know if it works.
Altough now THAT version has a new glitch where the game suddenly puts a random invisible wall after the bridge. I hate it when that happens.
Fortunatly it's right at the exit, so just jump sideways from the bridge and it ends the level awkwardly.

i wont be online again until 8/6/22
great map! it was pretty fun. and the third level would make great for a hangout map! and you can replace some of the emerald shards in the level with buttons that open up a secret area with respawning shield monitors or something! 4/5

hmmm... i wonder what THIS references...<_<

Heh, I have to ruin the fun here, I didn't intend that as a reference to Friday night funking.
But feel free to see it as a reference to it if you want.

The reality is simply that I wanted to put Zooey there as a nice easter egg/ nod to the show, but I didn't want her to be just awkwardly standing there,
So I had to give her something to do. Nodding along with music seemed cute. Kinda fit with Tails' technology theme.
And by making it big speakers, it made the easter egg also more platform game friendly in adding some gameplay to it.
That's the whole thinking process behind it.

I didn't even know what Friday night funking is when I made it.

Oh, fair enough! Thanks for clarifying.
