NEO Emerald Coast

[Open Assets] NEO Emerald Coast 1.2.5 - Act 1 revamp! [Update 1/2]

After a few months, this update is finally out! :3 And so to not make this any longer, I'll get to the specifics quickily.

At first, this update was meant to be a full v1.3 update, but due to me being too unpatient to finally release this update. (And to not make y'all wait any longer if I'd get burned out) I decided to split this update into 2 parts. Part 1 (a.k.a this one) focuses on act 1, where part 2 will focus on act 2, which may or may not be bigger than this part due to me not being exactly happy with the quality of level design of act 2... -3-

And with that out of the way, it's time for the huge amount of unorginized changes!!!!!!
Starting with a special one:
1. This addon now comes pre loaded with a custom momentum lua, to make this addon a bit faster than vanilla SRB2 allows. The momentum itself works like any other lua, BUT you slowly lose speed while running for a bit of balance and extra gameplay spice. >:3

And this is important for people who play with extra addons loaded! - If your favorite character has custom physics or if you think that the momentum is bleh. (:'<) You can disable it being using the "fademom" command in the console!

(The addon doesn't include a full 1 to 1 recreation of gm_construct... I had to mention this because of the legal stuff smh my head...)

And you can either keep reading or play the addon yourself:
-Act 1 and 2 got new thumbnails, along with wide and short vairants... Even though act 2 isn't finished for this version. T^T

NEC2_thumbnail_wide_placeholder.png

-Act 1 and 2 got new cool title cards for extra style, showcasing theme of the stage in a nice lil' fashion. :3

srb20137.gif

-Time emblem time frames for act 1 and 2 got a bit shorter to 3:00 and 3:30 to make it a bit more challanging with the momentum and new level design tweaks for act 1.
-The starting area in act 1 became a bit more alive instead of a dark corridor with basically nothing of substance. ;v;
-A lot of flowers got added in act 1. :3
-New sign decorations got added for extra personality and life, there's a bit of them so check them out yourself. :3
-Overall, MORE PLANTS!!!!!
-Added a cool light shine effect when inside an indoor place with a natural sunlight peeking through.
-The first jungle section now has funky slopes on sides of the section to launch off them skipping all the platforming, and the platforming itself got changed to be a bit less slow.
srb20262.png

-And as you can see, robo-hoods style a new color palette to make them more recognizible around all the green. :3 (And pretty factor...)
-The whole indoor jungle section got remade to be a bit harder and more engaging.
-The water color tint got fixed in both acts.
-The secret area of act 1 got more improved to make it a bit more silly... :3 (TW: ADVERTISING!!!!1!11!!)
-The jump pad section got prettier and got a new skip that you can pull off to skip the whole jump pad sequence!!! (Look near the at the mountain you exit from...)
-The spiral bridge section got a new straw hut along with new skip!
-Added and extended a skip that you can access after the titular (or iconic?) big slope......
-The dried out lake isn't THAT dry anymore! I added a shallow water floor inside the lakes, changed the slope jump section to not require a spindash anymore, and if that still isn't enough, I also added a new helping section where the slope used to be. :>
-Added flower pots near the entrance to Sea Town,
-Added more decorations to Sea Town. Including benches, flower pots, flower patches, posters and...
-Added a full store to Sea Town! There's a burger stand close to the garden corridor now, and it also has 2 bored shop keepers with some stuff to yap about, maybe you could take the time out of your day to listen to what they have to say... 👀 (Includes art and other dijinks made by @InfernoMelon...)
srb20150.gif

-Added a small skip letting you fly over the whole ending portion of sea town after the big slopes.
-Made the ending cave for act 1 cooler. :3

And now for some minor act 2 changes...
-Made a cool test for special interactions of regular objects with dust devils by adding spinning rings inside the first dust devil you meet.
-Added the light shining effect to every hole in the celling,
-Added cool wind particles for the wind glide section.
-Act 2 got a new theme.
Ye I think that's all for now. •_•

I hope y'all will enjoy this update!!! :3

Here's some teasers in the meantime of waiting for the act 2 update. :3

This addon just reached a milestone of 5000 downloads! ^-^

I know that I tend to make special art for the milestone posts, but I noticed just today that this addon somehow managed to reach 5K downloads so... Just grab raw versions + an alt unused version of the thumbnail for my N.E.C speedrun video! (Free to use by the way... if you somehow managed to get exactly the same time I did, I guess... •_•)

That's all I got sadly... :dramahog:

But that still won't ruin the fact that this silly addon of mine somehow managed to get 5K downloads. I kinda wanted this addon to have quite a lot of traction seeing how I spent 7 months making it, but I never thought that this would actually be the reality. I've put my whole soul into this addon and I'm glad that everyone somehow managed to like my FIRST try at making regular and original Sonic maps.

That's kinda a miracle that this stage came out this good seeing that at some points in the development I was just losing motivation and straight up ideas for further sections. I'm grateful for every person that interacted with the w.i.p thread of this map-pack and gave me words of encouragement, and for every person that gave this addon a try. I wouldn't be here without y'all. :devastation:

Thanks for sticking around. I really appreciate it. :>
I have a fewer okay. :C My brain is working at like 50% it's regular power. :C
CHANGES:
-Remade the wind surfing section from scratch, and made it way more engaging and most important of all... I made it prettier. :3 (Act 2)
-Changed the kinda under baked earth-button section into a pretty neat idea. I remade the button area and when pressed it will destroy the path that you used to reach it so the backtracking will be actually fun and engaging. :> (And this is pretty funny but the new button section actually got made because of a dream that I got. :oh: I'm not even joking when I say that brother got a vision.) (Act 2)
-Remade the secret room in the first jungle section so it will be higher quality. (Act 1)
-Added some more plants, sea weeds and other small details. (Act 1)
-Made changes to the extra life monitors in record attack mode. The more hidden monitors will give you 10K points, while the less hidden one will give you 1K points. (Act 1 & 2)
-Added Rhinotanks over some lance-a-bots for a bit more dynamic gameplay and added them in other places. (And because the statue variants are pretty slugish...) (Act 1 & 2)
-I wrote retro-video-game-manual-esk stage descriptions for both acts in the screenshots spoiler. (Is it peak writing? Or nah? :welcometoreleases:)
-I made a pretty spilar wood pattern for the singular straw hut in the entire addon. :3 (Act 1)
-Changed the addon prefix from S_ to SL_ to count in the rhinotank's lua.
-Added more water shields. (Act 1 & 2)
-Fixed an issue where the transparent parts of the steel crate texture would turn cyan in software rendering.

I hope these changes will make this addon at least a tiny bit better experience. :>
So if you read the latest status update then you already know what to expect, but I still have a pretty big new feature and that is... You actually being able to see the sea! :wow:
srb20146.png

srb20151.png

I'm glad that this stage will actually take place at the sea now... -.- Instead of inside of a weird closed invisible bubble.

And now it's time to meet our new guest in the NEO Emerald Coast's terrains...
Everyone, welcome the one and only.... Swift the "poorly drawn" Dragon! She came here from far away lands of Swift the "poorly drawn" Dragon addon page! (I'm not sure if that's an actual location...)

Anyway... Swift will be now present in both acts of N.E.C as a small lil' cameo in her own brand new hidden areas and with custom sprite made by me! Along with finding her, you will also find a bit of goodies like shields, rings and extra lifes!
Swift_act_1.jpg

Swift_act_2.jpg

Swift as a character belongs to @InfernoMelon, and as you can see I pretty much fell in love (not literally :oh:) with this character. So I decided to shove her into N.E.C just because she's an adorable goober that has to be protected at all costs. :3 (And because it's a nice thing to do) and if you're interested then you can check out the Swift in a more playable form yourself! She doesn't have any new moves or absolutely fabulous sprite work, but I still absolutely adore this addon either way and nobody gon' change the way I feel about it! :knuxsmug:

And so I won't just leave you empty handed in the search for Swift, I will reveal two hints that will help you find the areas she rests in. Here they go:

Act 1 - "A flooded pathway hidden beneath the leaves of a jungle."
Act 2 - "There are 3 pathways but this cave is square shaped? can there be a 4th one just beneath those walls?"

I hope these aren't too cryptic. :C But I'm sure that if you search in places with the mentioned criteria then you should find both of these areas pretty quickly.
(And please, don't data mine the locations. Or atleast try finding them normally the first time around. :C)
We reached yet another milestone of 2000 downloads! :D

2K.jpg

I made this art as a special for 2K downloads, which unfortunately means that there won't be any new update of N.E.C released right on time of posting this update. BUT there's a small update in progress that adds a cameo character to act 1 and 2. And it's someone's OC, and if the owner of that OC is reading this very post then... [Hi!!! \^-^/ As you can see I wasn't fast enough to post this update at 2K downloads :C]

The update will contain a new hidden spot in act 2 with the said character being in it, new shrub sprites that have a bit more vibrant green color tone, maybe a new spot for act 1 with the character in it, and brand new custom sprites for the many times mentioned c h a r a c t e r .

When the update releases I will write some emblem hints sounding hints that will help you reach the secret spots, but there won't be any actual emblems though, just some goodies that will aid you in the act or in getting that damn 100000 score emblem!
So first of all...

We just reached over 1000 downloads! ^-^

Thanks everyone for the overwhelmingly positive support!

I already posted this in the disscussion page, but I realised that this could kinda count as update and I also want to talk about future updates for this addon. So about that, I’m sure that I won’t do any updates on this stage for a long time, because after 7 months of dev-time I don’t think there’s anything under-cooked in this stage. For me, these two acts are perfect and the only way I can go now, Is either by adding something new like a hub-world or a extra act 3, that just like in classic games ends with a boss fight. But even if that sounds pretty cool, I’m sure that I will do this way further in the future instead.

And in the meantime you can check out my other works or check out this one if you haven’t played it yet! Even though this stage doesn’t perform as good as I expected it to from half a year of dev-time, I’m still happy that people had no issues with stage and could enjoy playing this stage the same I enjoyed creating it and losing focus from development because I was replaying those acts with every avaliable character. (This was
100% playtesting, not me just losing focus to replaying these stages instead of working on them. :knuxsmug:)

I still have one more thing to share about this stage that I never talked about yet. But two fellas, Nippy and July2413 recorded speedruns of this map-pack and posted them on their youtube channels! And if some how the stars aligned, and one of you guys are reading this very post, just know that I’m very glad you enjoyed zooming through this map-pack!

Wow, call me the professional yapper, and I won’t even argue about this take... Atleast you can tell that I’m really passionate for making this type of stuff, and someday I’ll hopefully inspire someone to try mapping for themselves! :wow:

Okay, I’m done now. I swear. :>
