What is SRB2: Chaotic Edition?
This is a chaos mod, enabled by the "Chaotic Engine". You may have seen the likes of it from Super Mario 64: Chaos Edition, or GTA V Chaos, this mod aims to do similar things. Every 3-10 seconds, you're given a "Chaos Roulette", which will roll a new random effect to apply to you. They can range from wind pushing you around, to your player sprite turning into a giant tree, or you being able to get double the amount of rings as usual; that is to say, it's a toss-up if the effect helps you, or impedes you, or perhaps neither at all!

There is also a second component to this: the Chaos City. A small chunk of a city torn from the ground, it's a safe haven away from the chaos down below... This is a hub level that you can access at any time (use the warp at the start of every level), to customize your chaos experience! At the end of every level, all the rings you currently have in your possession are turned into "Chaos Rings"; the pure essence of chaos found in every ring. Your "Ring Multiplier" determines how much chaos you can extract out of said rings, and it can be used as currency to buy upgrades and various tweaks to the chaos experience! All of this to say: you have some power to tame the chaos... or at least make it more manageable!

There are 78 unique effects that can be applied to the player, with some of them needing to be unlocked (from either the shop, or doing certain tasks in Chaos City!). There are a further 9 Universal Effects which can be all obtained by buying the appropriate item; these are effects that don't just apply to the player, they change up the world around you!

Okay... now what's this "Chaos Cards" thing?
Once you unlock Fang, you'll get the ability to purchase "Chaos Cards". If you've seen the SM64 hack "BAZR", the concept is similar; this brings a new gamemode, where your character's abilities have been replaced with a limited set of cards. Your goal is to beat the level using the deck you're given, and not run out of cards before you reach the end. "Chaos Rings" and such still carry over. Using said Chaos Rings you can buy new card suites to give you new useful abilities, you can "laminate" certain cards to boost their powers, and you can further upgrade the Chaos Cards system itself.

You can play this alongside the Chaotic System if you really want to... but I'd recommend against it, due to the sheer amount of chaos it causes. Up to you if you want an extremely difficult challenge though!

There's a total of 39 cards that you can use in this, with one of them being a hidden unlockable.

And now there's "Metal's Mayhem"?
Find Metal Sonic lurking in the sewers, and chase him down the hole left behind the clock tower, and you'll get access to a new mode: "Metal's Mayhem". This will force you into a rogue-like mode, where the fate of your next level is left up to the dice! Every time you roll the dice, you have a new level get chosen for you to play, on top of an objective for said level, what "Chaos Engine" you will be made to play with, and various mutators that will affect your ability to play said level.

The shops will be reset in this mode, making it so you need to buy all the upgrades for each individual run. And in this mode, all the chaos effects and chaos cards you'd ordinarily have will be shuffled around; you will be given a select amount of each, in which it is then up to you to decide if you wish to get rid of some of them, or add more to your pile.

The goal here is to defeat all the bosses, eventually culminating in the final boss! Can you make it through all the challenges in one run?

All of the above can also be found explained in an in-game manual, found in "Chaos City"!

You can get to "Chaos City" by taking the warps that you see at the area you start in, or around checkpoints you pass by! There, you can access the warp to Chaos City, or adjust your settings really quick! You can also open the settings menu any time by typing `srb2ce` into the console, or by talking to Tails in Chaos City.

I thought v2 was an alright mod, but v3 propelled it to one of my favorites through much easier settings customization and the inclusion of Chaos City. Collecting rings to spend gives an incentive to wanna put up with all the Chaos events past just a silly challenge. The Keep Rings on Hit feature also helps things feel much more balanced even when the game is throwing absolutely everything at you. I hope it receives further expansion with more things to put your hard-earned rings towards.

It also removed the No Ability event as far as I can tell, which I'm more than happy with.

Made me miserable. Love it.
All jokes aside though, this mod is really well made and put together. It makes for some really funny moments along with being a good challenge for people who have played the game for way too long.

I love the mod, but one problem I have is that when I try to use it in splitscreen, the effects usually cover the lower screen, that's why I ask, is it planned to add support for splitscreen at some point in the development of the addon?

“With my super form, I'll be able to Robo Blast 2 the next zone!“
the avaricious I taketh:
jokes aside as a mode that's made to screw you over it does a very good job at that, chaos city makes playing singleplayer worth your while

v3 blows v2 right out of the water; i knew i had to play it as soon as i saw the release trailer on youtube! a ton of great additions, the new effects are fun, and the global effects too! loving the new hub area, even if it is sort of just a menu with extra steps. definitely something to try if you wanna spice up your 150th playthrough of the main campaign, or your favorite level packs! i like the idea of the starting effects, definitely opens the door to new challenges, though i think there should be an option to make said effect last for the whole level. still had a blast playing through this mod, though, and i think it says something that i made an account here just to leave this review. definitely try this if you're an experienced player. stoked for future updates!

Played until Castle Eggman, and I gotta say, the new effects are really fun! As well as the interactions. I won't spoil anything here, but overall, I enjoyed my time with this mod! 5 stars!
