Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros. Version 2.3

There's honestly nothing I could say about this mod's quality that hasn't been said before. It's quite possibly one of the best and most polished mods on the whole MB. Anyone reading this probably already knows this, and considering how long it's been since the last update, I don't think anything will change about it until STJr finally makes good on the promise to remove P_TeleportMove.

However, I do have a few gripes. For one, I don't like Mario's acceleration. Luigi is fine - in fact, his main, defining difference from Mario is what makes him exempt from the issue I have. Mario's acceleration, particularly the start of it, is way too touchy. It makes platforming far more difficult than it needs to be by making small adjustments practically impossible. He takes off at a full sprint at the slightest touch of a movement key. Maybe this is less of an issue when using a joystick, but with digital movement, he can feel ironically a lot harder to control than his slippery-shoed brother.

That feeling of touchiness is not at all helped by the presence of the side flip. I'll often be trying to slow down to avoid falling off of a platform, only to go rocketing off of the opposite side because I accidentally jumped while skidding. I don't think I ever activated it on purpose, other than to test for its existence.

Also, this might just be a me problem, but I tend to get the Spin and Attack inputs mixed up a lot. I often end up plummeting into the abyss when I'm trying to launch myself to safety, or throw myself at mach 10 into the wall and/or horizon when I'm just trying to stop myself in the air and land on a platform below me. Doesn't help that, even when I do get my inputs straight, my Mario Odyssey reflexes often screw me over, as I try and use the Jump key out of a ground pound to start a dive.

It's almost perfect! My only issue is that you can't use models for Mini, Mega, or Kuribo's Shoe.

This is a pretty fun character to play around with. Mario's vast moveset helps keep the gameplay feeling fresh when traversing through levels, and even without using the large selection of fun powerups, it feels satisfying to tackle difficult challenges with his various moves to get through areas (including places that are character specific, such as tails only areas). I also appreciate that while he's able to swim, Mario can still make full use of his moveset underwater. I will say that while some of the powerups feel pretty strong, the P-Balloon stands out as being especially powerful even in comparison to the rest. I was expecting a time limit to be present as it was in Super Mario World, especially considering you can gain infinite height with it.

As for the SRB2 Persona implementation, implementing mechanics from his other games was a nice touch and certainly gives him a unique feel over playing as other characters. I did struggle with the jump timing at first (I'm unsure if it's a stricter timing here than in the actual games or if I'm just rusty), but it's not bad at all once you get used to it. I really do hope this serves as encouragement to others to play around with custom mechanics a little bit when making characters for SRB2 Persona or adding support for the gamemode to their characters.

It's a really fun mod and is worth downloading but i have one issue that i don't know how to fix and it's that whenever i run the mod on my server it crashes to desktop after a random amount of levels and i wish this wouldn't happen so if you could find what could cause it that would be awsome

Can you describe about what you did that causes these crashes? We can try and fix it for a future patch.

A very good mod, one of my favorite characters to play as in SRB2.

He feels very much like Sandbox/Odyssey Mario with some touches from the 2D games. Odyssey Mario is honestly one of my favorite game characters to control, and SRB2 Mario definitely comes close. The power-ups are also very fun to use, but I do think some could benefit from a tutorial (like the Cape Feather).

My one big complaint about this mod that keeps it from being five stars is the dive. I really don't like it being mapped to the same button as attacking, it just makes things tedious, like when I try to hit a boss with my hammer but I accidentally end up diving. I think the dive should be mapped to a different custom.

Other than that, this is a very good mod, and definitely one of my all-time favorites when it comes to SRB2.

Alright, I felt I should make another review about this mod since i felt i didn't exactly get my true feelings through last time. First off, I'll talk about the general "lack of flow", per se? Like, in Odyssey, after doing a dive you could cancel it into a roll and go from there. But here, there's not only no roll boost (which I can understand, it was meant to be used only like the normal roll in srb2, and that's fine), but you can't do that same dive cancel, either. Same thing goes for long jumps, in Odyssey you could go smoothly from a long jump to a roll by simply holding crouch (or i assume, at least) but here, you have to manually start rolling even if you DO hold crouch. And I appreciate that jumping on a normal enemy actually has Mario physically jump off of that enemy, but it just seems odd that the same thing doesn't happen with bosses or enemies that take multiple hits. Last but not least, i feel i should talk about the powerups, more specifically the Gold Flower and Ice flower, since you'll genuinely NEVER see them in the main campaign due to the level design having Mini Mushrooms and Metal caps instead. This isn't much of a problem most of the time, but there tends to be rings around sections where Mini Mushrooms are, due to them being Attraction Shield replacements. With that being said, this is still a pretty good mod.

It's Mario, sporting a very similar moveset from all the main 3d Mario games. He plays very well and adds a whole new way of play to SRB2, and the newest update allows the toggling of powerups making him much more fair in multiplayer gamemodes such as ringslinger.
The only problem is the custom buttons and work you have to do to get the best control scheme set up for this character, while you could play with the two main buttons many of the more advanced and powerful acrobatics require the use of custom 1 and 2. I personally have to remap my right shoulder button to crouch/ground pound for the character to work best for me.
Besides that one issue, you got yourself a perfect character right here.

mario does not curl when he jumps with the power star

Been using this mod since this came out and I love it, but the way the new dive works feels not good, would be nice if it was optional to have it work how it did in previous version were it was where you pointed

Great mod but why'd you have to change the super soundtrack.

Good mod mixed with Gaming den hangout.
But it's not the one I'm used to.

This mod is absolutely perfect The only thing I want is to be able to switch characters when playing duos, It's fun doing the Bros moves and I would love to be able to switch to Luigi and maybe even get the drill ability

Mod is cool.
-2 from the multiplayer lag.

Alright, first off: the Mega Mushroom theme sounds EXACTLY like it'd be a Silvagunner track.
Besides that, the powerups are great (granted, i wish the mini mushroom and gold flower were swapped around), Mario getting the Red Star when he enters a NiGHTS stage is genius, and SRB2Persona support just turning the game into an amalgamation into Mario RPG, M&L, and Paper Mario is genuinely amazing. Hopefully we get a Luigi somewhere later down the line.
Second off, here's some of my gripes:
Personally, I'd prefer if there was option to set dive to a separate button, since I either have to choose between only being able to dive odyssey style or not being able to change direction in the air while using my hammer.
It'd be a lot more convenient if the "hey stinky" emote could be moved to a button rather than being chat-only. Also, hitting anything that's relatively high in the air with a flower-type powerup is a pain. Maybe make it so that you can change the trajectory by moving the camera up or down?
Besides all that, pretty good character. I would recommend.

It's alright. The numerous custom features are probably the best part about this addon, and really serve as a highlight of what Lua can do in SRB2 these days! The sprites are fine, and making so many different animations at so many angles is certainly an impressive feat, but they're not really something that particularly wowed me.

After seeing so many rave reviews about Mario's gameplay complementing SRB2 itself quite well, I guess my expectations became a bit too high. The many abilities that Mario has are definitely fun to use, but for some reason Mario feels way too slippery to me, which really brought down my enjoyment of basic platforming...

If you have time, would you elaborate on Mario's slipperiness? Would help if we get a better grasp on the situation and maybe we can try our best to figure something out for it in a patch.

Extremely good mod, however, since the release of v2.2.15 of SRB2, it has been somewhat incompatible with multiplayer. SMS Alfredo, please fix your mod.
