The Champions of Nova come crashing in! Skip, Jana, Kou and Echoes join SRB2!
Welcome to StephChars! An OC pack created by yours truly focused on the Crystal Crash Team! I'll be updating this thread from now on when a new character or update is released. Without further ado, let's get this show started!
A Fennec Fox with his trusty Backpack with anything he could ever need! Provided, he has enough resources to craft them. Skip brings Platformer action inspired by A Hat in Time!
Skip is all about using every tool at your disposal to deal with any situation. His Double Jump combined with his Dives can help him reach higher up places and cross large distances without breaking a sweat! Should you need to fit through tight spaces, you can slide on the ground to pick up speed on slopes in style!
And when all that fails, Skip can grab onto most ledges to help himself up a platform he almost missed. Careful though, diving into walls will stun you and fling you back!
But that's not all, folks! By tapping Jump while Crouching, Skip will reach into his backpack to craft any shield in the game, including most modded ones too! By spending Scrap he gains from badniks, bosses and ring monitors, Skip is prepared for any situation!
These aren't your run of the mill shields, however! Almost every shield give Skip's Dive a unique active ability alongside its passive. From wall jumps to powerful electric dashes, there's a lot to experiment with. Just be mindful with your spending!
Too lazy to test what each ability does? Here's a quick list!

- Wind Dive (Whirlwind): Get a large vertical boost for your first dive!
- Homing Dive (Electric): Well, does what it says on the tin.
- Rebound Dive (Force): Stun begone! Diving into a wall will make you safely jump off it.
- Meteor Dive (Elemental): Fly into the ground with massive force. Leave a fire trail while sliding!
- Atomic Dive (Armageddon): Charge up a dive and blast away! Overcharging will blow it up!
- Bounce Dive (Bubble): Plummet to the ground and bounce back up!
- Burst Dive (Fire): Gives your dives a stronger boost forwards, excellent for speed!
- Wire Dive (Lightning): Dash forwards in a straight line at blinding speeds
A deadly, agile Fox with Crystal Bracelets capable of generating an energy blade sharp enough to cut down anything! Well, almost anything at least. Paired with dashing and wall jumping, she's a force to be reckoned with! Jana brings high speed action inspired by Megaman Zero!
Jana excels at both combat and speeding through levels. Her sword is capable of slashing through any obstacle in front of her, unleashing quick combos and shooting short range projectiles. By holding down Spin, you'll be able to charge a powerful strike that pierces enemies and travels double distance to use whenever you like to.
Tired of dealing with enemies? Dash away at any time! By pressing C1 or double tapping any Direction (can be toggled), Jana will gain a powerful burst of speed that she can keep by jumping in the air. While in this dash state, your air control is improved, allowing you to take sharper turns and keeping your speed.
But that's not all! Jump into any wall to latch onto it and slide down it! You can now jump away and string together wall jumps to blast through levels! And as a nice little bonus, wall jumps don't reset your dash state!
And as you might have noticed, Jana has one last trick up her sleeve - The Rekkohua! Triple jumping will cause Jana to plummet down to the ground. Should she fall for long enough, energy pillars will spiral around her, dealing tons of damage! Be very careful though, while in this state she cannot latch onto walls!

A confident sassy wolf that packs a punch to be reckoned with! Sporting crushing strikes and a startling lack of self-preservation, Kou brings intense Beat 'em Up action inspired by fighting games' resident grapplers!
Kou is a very no-nonsense character that can steamroll through any obstacle you put in his way. With his devastating Wolf Strike, he can charge a lunge-punch that is strong enough to one-shot tankier enemies like Castlebot Facestabbers! Should you need to reach a higher place you can punch into a wall to forcibly latch into it, and begin climbing! Very useful to pair with your next ability.
The powerful Wolf Missile! Channeling his inner grappler roots, Kou body slams into the ground, increasing the radius of his landing explosion the longer you charge. You can even trigger this effect by simply falling from a high enough place! If you just so happen to change your mind during (or even charging!) your dive, you can press Spin to cancel it, redirecting your movement with a quick frontflip!
But as usual - That's not all! With proper timing, you can unleash Kou's strongest ability and ace under his gloves' sleeve. The TITAN DROP!
Press Spin just before taking damage to trigger this powerful counter. A damage-negating counter attack that can obliterate most, if not ANY hazard or enemy that dares to strike first, punching back enemies and projectiles alike! By mastering this one ability, you become the terrifying force of nature Kou is known to be.
The only thing that can stop you... is death itself!
An ancient cosmic being fused with a shy reserved girl looking out for one another. Together, Echoes & Abyss' power is unmatched!
That power however, comes at a high cost - Make sure to keep Echoes protected, as any hit without Abyss by her side will put her out of commission!
Echoes is pretty much a "glass cannon" - Able to shred through levels and enemies alike, but most mistakes are severely punished! She spawns with Abyss by her side - who will not only augment her abilities, but protect her from most forms of damage. After taking a hit for you (Unless you have a Force Shield), Abyss will explode and Echoes will be left in a vulnerable state, weakening her abilities and causing her to die from any damage, no matter what! Worry not however, you can recover him by exchanging a Monitor for him, or simply reaching a checkpoint. I really do mean "exchange", by the way - you will not gain the rewards of the monitors if you don't have Abyss!
Don't let her fragility fool you however, she's still quite a powerful gal!
By holding Jump she can shield herself in the Void Glide! A shadowy, bouncy bubble that will pull in most objects into its damaging vortex. Even rings! Be sure not to hold it for too long, otherwise Echoes will be left flailing in the air until landing on the ground!
By pressing Spin, Echoes will dash towards your desired direction in a Phantom Twirl! A ballerina-like spin that's surrounded by shadowy flames that have a lot of movement potential, from higher jumps, to wall bounces and even a stomp after twirling! It also restores Void Glide's stamina, if it was used beforehand!
Both of these will be able to protect you from damage once - Keep an eye on the danger sign above Echoes! She won't be able to protect herself until its gone!
Finally, should you need to reach even higher highs, look no further than the Shadow Leap! If you hold Spin on the ground while not pressing any movement keys, Echoes will crouch. Holding Jump will then begin charging a super jump that will rocket her up into the skies! With some practice, this becomes one of her best vertical tools as well as a good way of blowing up tons of enemies or hazards! Do remember, you're wide open while charging!

Y'all know me. I like to hide plenty of easter eggs and extra features to my mods and I highly encourage you go out and find 'em all yourself! Although if you rather have a checklist of things to do and have fun with, I won't stop ya from reading this!
- Diving into walls make you spin around violently (funny)
- Running dust clouds + lil footsteps sounds because cute
- Afraid of the dark? Press C1 to use your trusty flashlight!
- Victory pose! You can also trigger it by pressing Toss Flag while crouching!
- Press C2 near anyone to give 'em a big hug!
- No one's around to help, but you don't need to prove yourself to anyone. [Press Toss Flag]
- Chaos Emeralds bring about the power of the mighty Steam Sale, cutting crafting prices by 25%!
- Skip learned some new dance moves thanks to his crystal fox friend.
- Straight out of his racing adventures, hop aboard the Red Rock by summoning it through a nautical token!
- The village of Sinopa tells the legend of a Hero's Crest, gifted by the combination of chaotic crystals and supercharged crafted creations.
- Press Toss Flag on the ground to jam out!
- Rock on with other Jana players and make a concert!
- Megaman Zero references in her poses, abilities and sounds! Can you find em all?
- Sword slashes actually cut enemies in half, with a script that lets you add your own cut enemies!
- Customizable controls + I/O
- Although embarrassed, she will join in the kicking dance party... Or well, she'll try.
- She really stretches the definition of a "boat", but she can summon her own Ride Chaser with a certain nautical token.
- An actual Super Form! (Hold down jump and press spin!)
Obtain the Ultimate Power (Toss Flag + C2)
- Strike a pose! Press Toss Flag to show off, with various different poses depending on if you're grounded or in the air! Can you spot all the references? (No timmy this isn't the pizza tower parry. You have an ability for that.)
- As for intentional Pizza Tower references, hold down Toss Flag on the ground to breakdance, accompanied by a jukebox reflecting your opposite color! (side effects include increased style points that don't exist and spingap-sized hitbox conversion)
- Try out the different shields! Your abilities will get a small tweak or two depending on what you grab.
- Actually heavy, falls faster than most characters. On a related note, cartoon falling sounds are funny.
- Try Titan Drop against... any sort of hazard or damage. You'll be surprised with how many things you're actually able to counter. Just don't try parrying things like bottomless pits or drowning, it ain't happening.
- As usual, Kou can join in the kicking taunt party should one begin near him.
- Downright ignoring what a "boat" is meant to be, Kou rides his EX Gear hoverboard with the use of the nautical token.
- Doesn't need a super form to kick ass. But he will gain an explosive extra level of charge with all seven emeralds.
- Mindscape Dialogue. But you already knew that, didn't you, dataminer?
- Strike a... pose..? On a rare chance when taunting, Kou will get a little... creative, with his poses.
- credits to dreebub. for
- Unique standing state while vulnerable. Poor gal's scared out of her mind...
- Cool fire trail following your run state!!
- Abyss uses your Opposite Color! Try out other MP colors and see how wild your friend and his powers can look!
- Colorized Abyss for your shields! Doesn't do much but it looks neat.
- Reaaally went wild with the amount of A Hat In Time nods on this one. And none from The Binding of Isaac's The Lost!! Which is ironic, considering that was a major inspiration for her vulnerability mechanic lmao
- Absolutely stretching what a "boat" even is, as Echoes hops on Abyss' back to fly around thanks to the nautical token.
- jump transition sprite!!!!!!!! (trust me it looks so much cooler than it sounds)
- Echoes shares both the Smug Dance and Victory pose with Skip! She's still learning, but she's giving it her all.
- Despite being a little shy, she can still join in the kickin' party!
- She's not much for hugs with strangers, but she's open to hold Skip close to her by pressing C2. Young love, eh?
- Be really careful with her while she's vulnerable. She's quite prone to bonking off walls helplessly.
- Unique death animation! But you know what's best for you, right?
- Think Abby takes up too much space? Press C1 to recall him. To show you're still protected by him, you'll be surrounded by his particles.
- By default, Echoes' vulnerability system is disabled in Match/Comp modes. Her abilities are also weakened to make her a bit more fair in a PvP environment. Don't care for balance? Disable that with the command "echoesnerf off"! Server only.
- Unique Mindscape Dialogue, with tons of little lore nuggets about her and Abyss. Totally never before seen dialogue. In an unrelated note, dataminers are why we can't have nice things.
- fun!
- Finally, by gathering the 7 Chaos Emeralds, Echoes & Abyss can finally properly fuse, even if for a moment. Gather 50 rings, and press C2 in the air to reach your Prime.
- Being a girl out of time, she's also a tad bit... out of touch. Help her out by pressing C2 + Toss Flag! Best observed on a thursday.
Finally... A section dedicated to well, everyone who has helped out in making my OCs a reality. I genuinely owe each of you so much and I am extremely grateful and fortunate to have been able to work with you lot. Love ya all

- Skip Coding - SMS Alfredo, Bloops, Shine & MotdSpork
- Jana Coding - Frostiikin & Lach, ft. MotdSpork, rumia1 and SMSAlfredo
And of course, thank you Spork, Rumia and Alfredo for stomping all the bugs you found while Frostii and Lach were busy!
- Kou Coding - Lumyni, SMS Alfredo, Frostiikin and Fav.
- Echoes & Abyss Coding - Emmette Clyde, Fav & Pikaspoop
Emmette, you really knocked it out of the park with bringing all my barely organized thoughts and dusty ol' document into reality, and really put the pedal to the metal when it came to on-the-fly tweaks to her moveset, reworks and all the countless little details that went into making Echoes as polished as she is today. And Fav, aside from being such a fun guy to be around, you really brought in a lot of awesome edits that made her an even smoother experience. Thank you so much to the both of you, I hope you're as proud with your work as I am! And get some rest now, will ya!!
This also goes to you, Pika! For hosting and helping out with ironing out a few issues at the very end!
Also, special thanks to Inazuma for a quirky little dance number he made for her ;)
- Balance and Suggestions - Inazuma
- Playtesting, Feedback, and Netgame Insanity - The CSCS & The Adventurer's Guild
And of course, you, the player!
Hope you enjoy StephChars as much as we did making em'!
I wanted to make a glass-cannon like character, someone who is really strong but can crumble really easily. However, SRB2 is definitely not a game where you could easily apply this sort of archetype (like trying to fit a fighting game character into a platformer), and so I had to tweak things around for it to fit. Her vulnerability has been tweaked numerous times, either making it more or less punishing - but the main reason why it is the way it is nowadays is very simple: player comfort. Or more accurately, avoiding player frustration.
I'm not here to make a souls game, I'm here to give people a good time, and if Echoes' fragility gets in the way often (Let's say, for example, using your abilities for too long removes Abyss and you don't have him for the rest of the level), she'd just be frustrating to play as. Like walking on eggshells all the time, that's just not a fun gameplay loop. This is why her abilities can protect her from a hit, but can't be abused as they're put on a cooldown for a long few seconds. It's all there to make her not downright frustrating to play, or having to be super careful when doing basic things. She's also loosely based off the Lost, not just because of the fragility, but because it fits her and Abyss' character far more than the Forgotten and ESPECIALLY Tainted Jacob. The latter being the complete opposite of Abyss' character.
I always focus on fun first, and though I do admit all of my characters lean towards the OP side a little bit, that's kinda just how I like to make 'em. I'm proud of our work and happy with how Echoes & Abyss play, I don't plan on reworking anything for them.
I've gotta say though, saying Jana has a "high skill floor" when she's singlehandedly the most unbalanced character I've made was pretty funny to read.
