When the world needed a hero the most, one brave critter rose to the challenge!

...and now the world isn't so sure about this hero stuff anymore.

A bubbly little slime is here to help!

The Slime started out as an inside joke among the members of the Brazilian SRB2 community as a character with very few animations, but a lot of squash and stretch in its movements. I decided to keep pushing the idea of a character that only used a few sprites, but still looked complete and was also satisfying to play as. And thus, the slime was born!

The slime is a more technical character that takes a while to get used to given his delayed jump and low starting acceleration, but his mobility-focused abilities allow skilled players to quickly dash through open areas and even take unusual paths by bouncing on walls and off slopes.

Single Player abilities:
  • High jump and Auto jumping
The slime's springy body allows it to jump higher than any of the default characters, and simply holding down the jump button will let him keep pogoing around the level.

Although, due to his lack of limbs to give him any proper impulse, the slime has a bit of a windup before he can soar through the air.

  • Air jump
A slime's body can be quite slippery, so it's not uncommon to see yourself sliding off a cliff during the jump windup process. However, after the slime is done charging up his jump, you'll still jump even if you are in the air, Donkey Kong Country style!

  • Spike Ball
The slime's main ability is to change its body into a powerful spiked slime ball with a press of the SPIN key, bouncing all around the stage and destroying anything in its path! Bounce off walls, off the ground, and destroy any robots that dare challenge your gooey self!

spike ball.png

Normally the spike ball can bounce on the ground only once before the slime reverts back to his normal form. However...

  • Spike Boost
By pressing SPIN again just before landing on the ground or touching a wall, the slime can both keep the spike ball moving and give it a massive speed or height boost depending on what you collide with. Keep up a good chain of boosts to go crazy fast!

h i g h.gif

And don't forget you can undo the spike state at any time by pressing JUMP, or transform into a spike ball instantly in the air with SPIN. Master your transformation and gain absolute control over the maps!

Co-op ability:
  • Spike Shield
If a nearby friend holds either the CUSTOM 1 or TOSS FLAG buttons, the slime can home in on them by pressing JUMP in midair, becoming a shield for them. This will only work if neither the slime nor the other player already have a shield.

In this form, the slime will protect his friends from any spikes, and will also break any walls they touch. But be careful! If they get hit, the slime is the one who takes all the damage. If a so called "friend" decides to throw you both off a cliff, hop off them by pressing JUMP!

  • Shield Pulse
As a shield, the slime can press the SPIN key to briefly extend his spikes, damaging enemies and monitors. The pulse lasts about as long as Amy's twin spin, and any monitors popped by this ability will give their rewards to the slime instead of his friend. If you're both running full speed ahead into an enemy with no way to stop, then PULSE!

  • Projectile Bouncing
The slime's shield pulse can also be used to reflect projectiles right back at whoever fired them. Not all projectiles can be reflected, but the ones that can be will be shot right back and damage whoever tried to shoot you! It even works in ring slinger!

  • Any enemy that manages to survive a spike attack will get slimed pretty badly. It doesn't really do anything, but painting Eggman's face green is always fun.

  • The spike ball is your only means of attacking enemies, and jumping on them will only hurt you instead. Transforming into a spike ball in midair is a lot more effective for combat than dashing at every enemy you see.

  • Slimes don't really need to breathe, so stay underwater as long as you'd like...but be careful with space. The lack of pressure is still enough to put the slime in danger.

  • The slime can't use shield abilities. This may be changed in the future, but right now you'll have to get creative with your spike ball bounces to reach higher areas instead of using a whirlwind shield.

  • Is all the action and adventuring getting to you? Why not take a quick break every now and then? Just stay still for a little bit and forget all your problems.

If a few slimes sleep close to one another something nice may happen!

As of v1.3 I think I am satisfied with slime as a whole so I probably won't be touching him again unless some worrying bug appears.

Thank-yous

I'd like to thank these stellar lads and lasses for helping me with character feedback, ability tweaking and ideas for the slime. So thank you to...

❤️ The SRB2 Brasil community
For giving me a lot of feedback on this little guy, and also for inadvertently making me create him 🍍

❤️ Ash, Xelork, Torles, Belleton, Buggie and many more super players
For pointing out things I could either improve or tweak, and also for putting up with my nonsense of course

❤️ Flame
For giving my lazy butt some much needed math help with the wall bounce's smoke circles

❤️ And so many others from both SRB2 communities. You are all amazing!

He's very cute! The little thing must've realized when his downfall on youtube happened, so he went to SRB2!

Funny thing is, I was able to make Slime turn super in a easier way, using mod support.

But anyways, happy mod making! (And say happy birthday to Tails too!)

HOLY HELL! I remember I used to make slimes JUST LIKE THIS, this is a dream come true for it to become a mod in SRB2! Thank you SO MUCH!

This mod is really unique and fun to play as! The only problem i have is that the code could use some optimization, As it lags in any zone past GFZ.

Hey Vanilla from discord, I must say Slime got even better but he would've been the best mod here if he still used peter griffin as his css art;)))

Delightfully creative with how simplistic the design is. I actually recommend going for 16 sprite angles instead of the usual 8 in the future, since I feel it would work pretty nicely with this character.

I could always update his eyes' sprites since they are easy enough to pre-render at 16 angles. I'll think about it for a future update

I AM OBSECED WITH SLIMES, WHAT IS MY PROBLEM?

Well, it's a slime, that's for sure!

Overall I find it a bit fun to play as. It takes a bit of practice to try and master this little guy's abilities, but you'll soon be balling in no time. With how capable the little guy is, you can probably even traverse certain character's paths with enough brute force.

There's still quite a bit I have not seen as I have not finished the campaign with Slime, but I'm sure that there's plenty to be seen and enjoyed with friends. If the single player campaign is fun, then it's probably even better in multiplayer!

Despite the small amount of sprites, it still feels very expressive and alive. There's very good usage of squash and stretch in it. Plenty of it.

This review may be a bit biased since I like slimes. It's okay though. Very fun, yes yes.

So glad to see he's finally here and ready to goop some goons, cant wait to see how he evolves over time.

There's a learning curve to controlling him, but bouncing around at high speeds is super fun and satisfying.
