Vivian takes the stage!

Everyone's favorite Paper Mario character, Vivian, is here! After the remake gave her some much-deserved attention, she's off adventuring on her own in the world of SRB2!

VivGiggle.gif

I tried to match her look as close to The Thousand Year Door as possible. This means instead of rotation sprites, I programmed in a paper tilting/flipping effect inspired by how characters in the TTYD remake move!

PaperFlip.gif

She also has her trademark Stretchy Shadow Tail Thing. Finally, SRB2 can experience the majesty of looooong Vivian.

VivTail.gif

As for Gameplay, Vivian can use her iconic Veil to slip through objects, gain speed, and gain height! She can also perform a midair Shade Fist.

Abilities

Veil:
Press Spin to use Veil, Vivian's primary ability. She uses the rolling physics in this state, so it gains speed faster but is harder to control. When Veiled she passes through any object, This means she can pass through spikes, but it also means she passes through springs! Be careful! Pressing Spin again will exit the Veil state.

Veil Dive: By pressing Spin in midair, Vivian dives downwards. When she hits the ground she enters veil, and gains a boost of speed! Keep in mind that all of you momentum is redirected in the direction you're aiming.

Shade Fist: By pressing Jump in midair, Vivian will do a Shade Fist. Her attack range is larger, and she stalls for a bit in midair!

Stylish Moves

Both the Veil Dive and Shade Fist can be improved with timed commands, just like in TTYD!

Veil Jump: If you jump immediately after entering the ground after a Veil Dive, you'll soar into the air! The height of your jump depends on your speed! You can reach insane heights by chaining multiple Veil Dives together!

VivStyJump.gif

Shade Fist Flame: By pressing Spin during a Shade Fist, Vivian will shoot a fireball! This fireball aims at a nearby enemy if one is in front of her.

This is my first mod for SRB2, so I'd love to get some feedback, but go easy on me please!

CHANGELOG

v1.3: The "player feedback" update

So after receiving some feedback, (particularly with how busted she is) I decided to update her a bit! Minor tweaks this time.

TWEAKS:

- Veil Jump now only boosts your height if you use the stylish variant. It also doesn't go as crazy high at high speeds. As you reach higher and higher speeds, additional speed has a diminishing return on height.

- You can no longer just hold Jump and mash Spin to perform repeated Veil Jumps. A Veil Jump can now only be initiated when pressing Jump while veiled.

- You can now stay in veil at low speed. It no longer uses rolling physics at low speed, but will still roll at high speeds. This way you can use it while still, but can also still gain speed on an incline.

- Vivian will no longer default to facing left when still. She instead faces whichever direction she last faced, just like in TTYD.

BUG FIXES

- Executing a Stylish Veil Jump on the first frame after hitting the ground now works properly.

- When dying during a veil dive, she will no longer play out her veil animation after dying.

I'd really love to hear people's feedback on this update! I felt she needed a nerf, but I don't want to overdo it to the point where she's no longer fun to play.

v1.2: The "I updated everything during the review process" update

So while this mod was being reviewed I decided to update it... and then update it some more... and then update it even more...

I'm going to update the main post with gifs to reflect these changes in the morning, but right now I need sleep lol

NEW FEATURES:
- Float has been replaced with a midair spin. This hopefully makes her less able to just fly over large swathes of the level while still being useful. It also extends your attack radius, so it gives her a bit more offense!

- STYLISH MOVES! I wanted to incorporate something resembling Action Commands, so now each of her abilities has a new, more powerful Stylish variant! If you jump immediately after a Veil Dive you'll go higher and spawn a ring of fire. If you press spin in the middle of a twirl, you'll shoot a fireball at a nearby enemy. This is accompanied by a sound cue and a STYLISH! graphic. I think it makes her a lot more fun! STYLISH! sprite is made by https://www.deviantart.com/mradamluigi

BUG FIXES
- She should now work properly with Automatic camera. I still highly recommend Manual, but it's at least playable.

Veil Jumping is one of the most fun mechanics ive seen in an addon
(Also the custom 1 easter egg is amazing)

After a quite uninteresting 2024 for SRB2 mods, Vivian truly takes the cake as one of the best SRB2 mods I've played this year! I came into this mod with low expectations, since most other Paper Mario mods are quite generic and low-effort, but Vivian is truly a one of a kind character with a lot of fun movesets and gimmicks that make her stand out from the croud!

To add upon this, Veil is probably the selling point of this character. It's extremally overpowered, but you need to master it in order to reach it's full potential. I'm just a big sucker for characters that play like this, especially in platformers; I'm also a big fan with how her shadow makes her taller instead of just jumping with her. This is really the only paper character that's fun to play AND faithful to the source material!

If I were to criticize this mod, the main problems aren't even with the moveset itself. Later SRB2 stages require a lot of tight platforming, so it becomes extremally difficult to do veil without running into a hazard or flying myself into a bottomless pit. although that's more because of my skill issue lol
Another big problem is that Vivian doesn't seem to be playtested, because I ran into many glitches with her... leg... shadow thing when playing through the game as her. Mainly when the gravity switches in the egg rock zone, when she jumps on certain rocks on Red Volcano, and the special stages just make it disappear entirely!
Although that can all be fixed with a simply update, not anything game breaking or ruining.

Overall, my girl was done great with this mod. Honestly, might even be one of my favorite characters of all time!

tbh its a pretty good addon for someones first mod, but i kinda wish she had the moving animation in her source game. (and yes i do know that this type of stuff can be hard). however its impressive that you coded in her moves from ttyd like "veil". so in conclusion, i give this 4 stars.

For being your first character, you did a fantastic job. Not only did you animate Vivian like in her source game, but you also gave her a lot of mobility that I think makes her easy to use for any situation. Easy and simple to use.

I love this mod! I love Vivian! It's kinda funny how just yesterday I wanted a Vivian mod Xb As for the mod itself, her moveset is very fun! You can get a lot of speed and hight! And the air-spin is cool, along with the fire ball you can shoot! Veil though is a mixed bag, I like the premise, but hate how it works. I think it should be controllable so you can move around freely, and even with the normal Veil, you can't hide while not moving. Still tho, amazing mod! Love it!

so you're telling me that there's vivian... AND momentum wavedashing in srb2?? peak.

(review written for v1.2 of vivian)
vivian's moveset is simple, intuitive, and fun. shadow drop and rise have an incredible sense of flow. i really like the 5 tick "stylish" window; it's not too precise, but it still requires precision which is just so nice for interactive gameplay-- and oh my god the dopamine i get from hitting a stylish move with the sfx and the visual actively makes my day better, actually such a nice touch.
replacing hover with punch seems like a nice decision. i haven't played the mod with hover, but it just seems like hover would make levels absolutely free. besides, i think the projectile works really well with her moveset since her veil moves can feel a bit slippery for combat. so overall, in my eyes it's probably just the better ability of the two for vivian.
that said, veil rise gives you absolutely too much. you can easily reach over 1500 units in the air (higher than tails can fly) and over 1.5x the speed of a fully rev'd spindash in under 2 seconds without having to stop and charge anything. speed is super satisfying to achieve in this game, but veil rise feels like it hands it out for free, as well as breaks the distance vs height relationship in level design. she doesn't feel balanced at all with other characters or levels (custom or vanilla). shadow rise alone made me consider ranking her 3 out of 5 with how absolutely cracked it is. with that, i'd like to mention again that i really like the 5 tick stylish window -- the precision part is not the problem; i just think each stylish veil jump gives you way too much momentum and height.

her visuals, despite the crunchy pixels from srb2's (lack of) palette, are super neat. the custom paper effect and her stretchy shadow tail thing are SOOOO cool and adds so much charm to the character while still fitting into the visuals of srb2. it does feel like her jump animation is a tad slow, and also she enters her jump animation whenever dying after using veil dive. and that's... really all i have for the visuals, besides c1 for trans pride being peak. all her animations are expressive and fit what she's doing, and because of this it's pretty easy to look past the cronchy pixels.

final nitpicks, ranked:
- the custom paper mario effect is so peak, but it feels a little unnatural that she always defaults to left at a standstill even if she was just looking to the right. i could not possibly know how difficult it is to code her looking the same direction she was just looking in, but if it's feasible it'd feel a lot more smooth and would be even peaker.
- instead of just showing the player "stylish" i think it'd be cool to have the rest of the paper mario expressions (i.e. nice/great/excellent/whatever else there is idk i haven't played for a while) to give out for consecutive successful veil jumps. also, i think it'd be kinda funny if you missed one in the chain and it showed the mario party "miss"
- it'd be kinda neat if she could shadow veil under knuckles breakable walls (like the one at knuckles' path split in gfz2), although this is probably way more effort than it's worth since most knuckles paths are slower anyway.

for a first srb2 mod this is incredible. most of this review is nitpicks-- the only thing i can't look past is veil rise being as completely cracked as it is right now. but even despite that, i'm still having so much fun with her just because she flows so damn well and her visuals are so charming.
