Ray the Flying Squirrel

Ray the Flying Squirrel v1

He is AMZING!! Sprites, abillities - the real 2.2 Ray. Awesome job!

I enjoy the Sprite work very much, wouldn't be a character I would enjoy playing regularly or not even at all. I am not one to be dishonest with myself nor when I try to push feedback. It lacks comfort and it would perhaps deserve some QOL additions.

While I see quite quality work put there, it doesn't necessarily feel great in the air. I understand I am an oddity and a minority since I am playing with only a keyboard but Ray feels heavy to steer the jaw rotation, simply it is slower than I think would be comfortable.

There are definitely two odd additions in play a bit noisy element is the speed lines, while they give a sense of speed, they literally fly into your face. So I would recommend either making them translucent enough or not having them at all.

Instead of wall clinging (2nd oddity) I would really focus on making touching walls more forgiving, mere touch of corner can cancel out flight. While that's a thing even on the ground, at least you can be sure you are on the ground while in the air you are running into the risk of falling into the pit. And in cases of corners, the clinging function won't even run.

Maybe that isn't your fault and perhaps it already was fixed, but in my current next build of SRB2, Ray defaults to SKINCOLOR_BLUE.

I would like to say something more positive to end this quite negative feedback sandwich, but I don't want to delve into specifics of how good Ray sprites are. However, I can appreciate how Ray is vanilla-styled, I think that deserves a mention.

I've nothing to add to MK's review, but wall climbing feels completely useless and unnecessary (like Mighty's) and this character is still unplayable with automatic play style.

and yes, he has become much weaker and they are now much less interested in playing. I'm upset because this is my favorite character in sonic mania and I want to have fun, which I don't get from this character. definitely needs a buff or rework

It's everything I ever wanted out of a Ray mod, and it's made by the Chads known as Team Combi-Rings themselves! Ray's gliding definitely takes a while to get used to, as pulling up from Ray's glide doesn't always guarantee you getting extra height like SMW's Cape Feather mechanics, but I think that helps it not bust maps wide open. Ray is so expressive and adorable, and I was squealing with delight with every action. Bravo! This was an absolute delight of a surprise!

Sprites are the shining glory here. They look great and 10,000x better than the sega sonic sprite rips from 2.1 ray.

But the gameplay is almost identical to his 2.1 counterpart with balance adjustments and the additions of wall cling and the flutter(?). Once you lock the rhythm down, you can make great distances.

The new additions help make it feel slightly new but its functionally the same ray, thats ok.

I really like that you need to get a good run up or have some altitude to work with for the ability to be effective. The rewards aren't free, but it only takes a little bit of effort to perform some very satisfying movement. Definitely the most fun I've had playing the vanilla campaign in a LONG time. The sprites are also rock-solid, consistent, and have heaps of character.

The Main Cast + Chaotix mighty + This mod + Encore mode = The true SRB2 Mania experience, for now at least

The gliding is crazy good, Ray was meant for Arid canyon

the changes from mania regarding anims and design are amazing and i like air boost as an addition for the most part (i liked it in AIR) but im not digging the rest of the moveset changes

1. programmers mightve already seen gifs i posted in CS demonstrating this but even at spindash speed his glide physics have been HEAVILY nerfed since mania. starting a full charge spindash glide doesnt feel as satisfying since the BASE snappiness from pitching upwards AND downwards has been reduced, and i mightve understood reducing the max rise angle but applying that to diving is silly. also im sick of the chaotix trail, it only fit one char from there and ray easily couldve had SPR_RAIN instead of a random shiny blue trail lmao
2. wall latch is the most boring addition here (didnt like it in AIR) cuz not only is this a fanmade move that intrudes on gliding controls here and takes away some of the challenge in gliding over massive gaps, when including chaotix this now makes the 4th character that relies on walls in pretty much the same manner. personally a toggle like the source AIR mod implements wouldve been great (same goes for air boost) but it wouldnt have stopped me from making this comment
3. air boost is mildly annoying when it stops me from doing seamless dive rolls when it really has no place triggering during a dive (just check for rising!!!!)

in reality this rating is more like a high 3 so i just rounded up bc the rating system lololol

He's definitely a lot of fun to use, but I have to agree with EmiShoTony; he feels like he got hit with the nerf bat a little too hard regarding flight decay which makes it difficult for him to move vertically. I also feel like his Wall Cling is a bit too sensitive; oftentimes when I glide close to a wall, even when I'm not facing it he sticks to the surface and completely breaks my pacing, which makes trying to glide around a corner difficult. He certainly shines in wide-open areas, but it'd be nice if his kit could be better utilized in more narrow spaces.

Dude, I love this funny little guy, I am so happy to see him again. And he even controls better than the other Ray mod we had before this one. Plus the addition of the Air Boost and Wall Cling from his Sonic 3 A.I.R. counterpart is a nice change of pace.

I will say this, though. The older Ray mod actually has a leg up from this one due to Super Ray having the ability to execute his glide multiple times in mid-air there. This Ray can't do that for some reason. Do you think we can have that in a future potential update? Other than that, this is THE Ray mod for THE Sonic fan game of all time. No others can compare.

Ray Looks great, that wall cling Is giving me NSBU's acorn power-up vibes. The Particles while gliding really give a sense of speed to Ray!

Any expressive character is welcome! ;) , oh yeah hes definitely better than the Glide Armor from Megaman X7 lol

I think this mod is really cool! The sprites look amazing (as always), and he's still fun to play around with while still trying to get used to his control.

But I can't lie, I think he may be a bit TOO nerfed here.

I understand why, we don't want him breaking levels like breaking a gram cracker multiple times for funsies, but it's almost impossible to gain any height at all, and when you do, you usually get hit with the decay and lose even more height.

I think you should improve his height gain a little bit at least, to make it easier to use his trademark ability and fly and glide over portions (which is REALLY fun and why the cape powerup and in Mania Plus are like beloved in their respective games), while still requiring skill to actually break levels.

Though, because I haven't used him all that much (I just got trying him out recently of course), this COULD just be me having a skill issue. But regardless, Ray's awesome.

Amazing work Team Combi-Rings!
