New Thok

[Open Assets] New Thok v1.5.7

hello, when u adding a new update cuz I think you should add a jump thok mode

Aw hell naw bro removed herobrine! anyways I think you should add a kind of like stomp thokking thing if you hold shift to get a bit of verticality. it works the same as the regular thok, letting you thok after you've bounced off a badnik or capsule or something. this way guarantees that elemental shield still has use and if not increase its hitbox by a bit so it does.

Now this is some very good changes to what is basically a glorify instant boost ability.

That's momentum-based thok that you added actually makes me actually enjoy the mod now (plus it's goes hard with momentum mods lol) also thank god, you added that letting go the jump button actually makes you stop floating, it's mod even better, 5/5

(also ignore that the OG Thok was momentum-based, I was trying to say if you Thok and jump before hitting the ground at the right time, you carry that Thok's momentum, letting you actually chain it if are good enough at it, sorry about that)

Thanks, I'm glad my updates have made the mod more fun for the players.

I've played most major versions of SRB2, (Halloween, Xmas, Final Demo, 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2) and have used techniques like Thok Chaining. (If you do it from a standstill its almost like a Spindash Jump, without the worse air control... of course, timing it right can be difficult).

Also, in this mod you can hold spin after Thokking to spin immediately when touching the ground, which should make Thok Chaining easier!

yo I'm on my alt because I forgot to add something.I think you should also add a speedrunning mode where if you tap jump after you thok it slows you or stops you. also add a jump thok option or a hold to thok, tap to double jump (if you want to) this is just to make it easier for speedrunning it. I also think a proper redirection for the thok would be better as if you try redirecting it slows you down or doesn't change your direction at all. these are just suggestions and would give this even more gameplay and variety

I considered a Stop-Thok, but I think it would do one of two things:

A. Undermine it's synergy with Shield Abilities that stop you (Such as Force Shield's ability).
B. Bloat the controls with too much stuff, making it too complicated.

I'm glad you like the mod, and thanks for the ideas. <3

this is definitely a thok addon

yeah i don't have much else to say it's a good replacement
definitely prefer it over the wacky hoohoo spin that was teased for 2.3 at one point even though i know that one was scrapped

this is awesome man. I think for the thok you should combine the spindash release and thok sound together and add reverb + lower pitch. I also think that it should be a bit momentum based for momentum mods but with a cap to how fast it can go as if it were crossmomentum.

I'm glad you like it! Thanks for the suggestion, you smell nice.

yes, lets make something that barely resembles the thok, call it new thok, make the sound loud as all hell, which causes an irritating gameplay experience. like cmon even new super mario bros did the new branding better!

I have been unable to find a sound effect that I think suits this ability. Unleashed is my favorite Sonic game, and I thought it fit as a sound effect because it has that "Power" to it--and they're both air-dashes. I'm not sure if I know how to decrease the volume of sound effects--I just got the sound effect from sounds resource, I'm sorry you didn't like it.

Edit - Sound effect volume has been lowered as of 1.5.1. 1.5.2 changes the sound effect to an entirely different one, but you can reenable the old sound effect [with the lowered volume] with the console command LegacyThokSound On.
I think you are incorrect about it "barely resembling the thok". Both are airdash type moves that send you in the direction you're facing at high speeds.
I specifically called it the New Thok (and not Thok Improvement) because I knew when making this that I wouldn't be able to please everyone. Many people would argue the title to be misleading because they think it isn't an improvement. The changes I made to the Thok were to make it feel new, to give it new features and update it. Thok, if it were made today -- hence New Thok.

I love how this move makes me think of new ways to get around levels and is overall a nice that it makes the shields better to play with!

Tbh I think it's better than the vanilla (kinda). The improvements for the useless shields make it better.

I'm a big fan of this take on the thok. It's a very fun take on it, my only complaints are i'm not big on the sound it makes and that i feel it doesnt need to break walls. If I could decide to put this in vanilla, id say for balance it wou;dn't break walls. Otherwise, very fun!

Thanks, havent been able to find a better sound effect, dont really like how it plays with the normal thok sound effect, and this sound effect IS from an official Sonic game to be fair.
As for the breaking walls part, it only breaks walls rolling and spindash will break so I don't see the issue here. If it were up to me i feel like jumping into a wall should break it. There's no explanation as to why rolling breaks a wall and jumping does not for spin characters. I feel like if its a speed requirement the thok certainly passes.

This is a thok replacement I can get around, most other thok "improvements" just give sonic vertical height, this one just halts it for a while! I would take this over the thok anyday. Pairs nicely with the whirlwind shield slowfall.

This Is Just The Best Thok.
It Plays And Feels Better.
And It's More Useful As You Can Bounce Off Badniks And Then Thok.
This Is The Thok Of All Time

Out of all the pain of people trying to reinvent the thok, it's honestly refreshing to see a take that tries to build off of what the thok already does as oppose to try and overcomplicate things to where certain rules have to be made up specifically for the ability.

Though in saying that it does feel a little overtuned in some areas. While the combo effects with the Wind and Force shield are pretty cool I dunno about the Armageddon Thok effect. Just seems too hyper specfic and from a casual standpoint it's burning a resource for speed that might trip more people up... Of course in a speedrun setting it's pretty moot but still I think the other perspective is worth having. :P

In some ways I think the hang time before falling is just a BIT too generous. I'm actually not opposed at all to the hang time but I think with the speed it gives it can end up trivializing more platforming challenges than what the ability aims for. I'd still keep it around cause in some ways it lowers the barrier of entry for the skill and maintains the depth it has.

Probably the one thing I believe that makes this truly overkill is the wallbuster part of the move. Imo it seems like it'd take away from Knuckles in terms of uniqueness.

Honestly those paragraphs are more or less nitpicks than anything else because other than that I love the additions of recovering thoks from badnik bouncing and I'm eager to see if there might be more shield combo things that can be done.

I know reviews aren't for pitching ideas but this ability mixed with the fire shield? I would think that would be a funny fun time!

I. You can use the Armageddon Shield without going into the stratosphere by just using the shield button instead of the jump button, but that does mean you can't Thok until you lose it. There's only a few spots where this is useful but I just felt it made sense for a one-off item to be extremely powerful. Dunno if there's many other ways to keep Armageddon a one-use shield AND have it worth keeping, since enemies aren't really that much of an issue. The most useful spots to have armageddon would probably be Aerial Garden and Arid Canyon... and those levels have plenty of armageddon shields. That part of arid canyon is kinda the reason its as powerful as it is. Just wanted it to be more useful.

II. Yeah, the air hang does help Sonic get more horizontal movement, but it indeed makes precision platforming a problem. It also means you can barely use it in Metal Sonic's boss arena. I feel like the air hang is more helpful than not, though, I did a full playthrough with it and I thought it felt good but that could be dev bias.

III. I only know of one particular spot where its convenient to thok into a spinbreakable wall. It only breaks walls Sonic can roll into to break. I feel like logically it makes sense for it to break spindashable walls but I mean i getcha, i just thought it'd be cool for the most part.

Yeah, this ain't better than better OG Thok because it more functions like the Modern Sonic's Airdash then the momentum-based Thok also I can't even get speed from because it's WAY too floatily and the sound it makes is very annoying
Pyrakid Wolfo
Pyrakid Wolfo
Correct, this is an Airdash-Thok hybrid. You float for a moment like the Airdash, and you keep your speed like the Thok.
Regarding the sound, its the Airdash sound from Sonic Unleashed.

Edit: The Original Thok isn't "momentum based". It sets your current speed to a number, not adding a number to your current speed.

The sound that it makes has been changed as of 1.5.2, the original sound it made can be reenabled with a console command, the original sound's volume also has been decreased.

Also, as of 1.5.3, there's a Momentum Thok mode you can enable with a command.
Again, the Original Thok is NOT momentum based, you may be thinking of Cross Momentum (or XMom)'s "Momentum Thok" move, or other mods with a Momentum Thok.

Also as of 1.5, you can let go of the jump button early to stop floating. Though I will say I feel like the float should actually help you get speed because the ground sets your speed back to your running speed when you touch it, or at the very least the float should help you cross horizontal gaps, its at it's core, an air-dash.

I like this. It's a nice, somewhat simple modification of the thok. It's what it says on the tin.
