As an SRB2 expert, I'm here to give you some tips to get good at SRB2!
Read all of these, and you'll be a master of SRB2 in no time!
Tips for Sonic:
Don't use the thok in tight platforming sections, you might overshoot your jump and fall into a pit and have to go back and try again.
When in the Fang boss fight, avoid using the thok too much, you might shoot yourself off the train in the second phase.
Make sure to play with Automatic Braking on. It will SERIOUSLY help when you get to Arid Canyon and beyond.
In the Metal Sonic race, use the thok VERY CAREFULLY. This level has a lot of lava and bottomless pits, you do not want to fall in.

Tips for Tails:
Try using Tails' flight as much as you can to take shortcuts the others usually can't.
Tails is a good character for newer players, so when starting out choose Tails.

Tips for Knuckles:
Knuckles can glide and climb walls. Similarly to Tails, use this as much as possible to take new routes.
Knuckles has a lower jump height than everyone else, Meaning he might be forced to take different routes in certain stages, like Egg Rock Act 1.
Knuckles can't climb certain walls. It may be hard to tell when you can and can't, so check certain walls often to see if you can climb them.

Tips for Amy Rose:
Amy's jump height is slightly higher than everyone else. Use this to make jumps Sonic might have trouble making.
Amy cannot spin, meaning she'll have her own pathways to take in certain stages, like the beginning of Arid Canyon Act 1.
Amy's hammer spreads out hearts that go a short distance when she attacks. These might not be useful in the main game, but they will be in Multiplayer, more on that later.
Amy can use her hammer after a jump by pressing jump again or pressing spin. This is called a Twin-Spin, and you'll be using it a lot through out the main campaign.

Tips for Fang:
Fang can use his popgun to attack enemies from a distance by pressing spin. You'll want to use it in boss-fights like Castle Eggman's boss.
Fang can tail bounce after a jump by pressing and holding down the jump button. You can use this to evade boss attacks and get to higher-up areas.
Fang has the highest jump in the game. Use this similarly to Amy's jump to get across platforming sections Sonic could barely make.

Tips for Metal Sonic:
Metal Sonic has a boost mode that can destroy enemies and spikes while it's in effect. This might be hard to control, though. To gain boost mode, gain a lot of momentum quickly.
Metal can hover in the air, making many platforming sections easy.
Metal can also go into boost mode by charging a spindash long enough.

Tips for the shields:
SRB2 has many different shield types, the Elemental Shield, the Attraction Shield, the Armageddon Shield, the Whirlwind Shield, the Pity Shield, and the returning Water, Fire, and Lightning Shields.
The Elemental Shield is usually best for avoiding fire damage and going through long water sections, or to quickly drop down to the ground.
The Attraction Shield from 2.2.8 and below doesn't really have any real use outside of quick ring collection, but 2.2.9 and beyond introduce the ability to chain the homing attack it gives you, opening up new and unique ways to use it, such as to quickly wipe out a small group of enemies.
The Armageddon Shield is pretty rare, and it's only real use is to clear out groups of enemies. Ringslinger makes it pretty useful, however.
The Whirlwind Shield is more common than these other shields and sees more use. The active ability allows you to boost upwards a short distance, and it's usable while falling as well. Use this shield to gain that bit of height you couldn't or use it to save yourself from falling into a pit.
The Pity Shield has no abilities at all besides protecting you from one hit, so we won't go on much longer.
The shields returning from Sonic 3 see similar uses they got there here.

Tips for Ringslinger game modes:
In these game modes, you'll need to collect rings as ammo to shoot your opponents. Avoid taking damage as you'll lose all of your ammo.
This isn't a tip, but it's recommended to play with friends, preferably in a Discord call.
There are also extra ring types. The Rail Ring is best used to send an opponent flying off a ledge or to get them away from you. The Bomb Ring is best used in small areas with many opponents to damage all of them. The Automatic Rings are best used to gun down many opponents quickly. The Bounce Ring is best used in small, boxed in locations for maximum usage. The Grenade Ring is best used as a surprise attack. The Scatter Ring is used in situations similarly to the Rail Ring, but has a slightly wider range to hit more opponents.
This mode makes the Attraction Shield, Elemental Shield, and Armageddon Shield damage players, making them liabilities in these game-modes.
Amy's Hammer hearts and Fang's popgun also damages opponents.
