Pikachu v2

PikaJade

Modder
Pikachu is my most downloaded mod - albeit not by the widest margin, Infinite's not too far off, but I digress. I've seen him brought up in various places multiple times, and people always seem to be the most surprised when I point out that I made it.

I'm glad so many people enjoy my mod, but I don't think it's necessarily my favorite of my catalogue. The moveset, while fun, isn't exactly my most thought-through or polished work, and the sprites are... rough, to say the least. Or fuck-ugly, to say the most; then again, every artist is their own worst critic, so maybe his look isn't so egregious to others.

Still, though, I'm not sure I'm happy with Pikachu's sprites. I've gotten way better at rendering since I made them, and with Infinite off my plate, I've got plenty of creative energy to put into other things (more on that in another thread?). As such, I've opted to do something I swore I'd never do, and make proper SRB2-style sprites for Pikachu!

These ones are still based on prerenders, as you might be able to tell. Maybe it's cheating, but eh, it's the way I prefer to get things done. Instead of just drawing faces on and putting them in like I have been, though, I'll be going through and manually polishing each one, making sure the shading and shapes make sense, the outlines are properly placed and colored, and everything is antialiased and generally fits in better. Plus, on top of a chubbier model with better shading, a few of Pikachu's more awkward animations have been redone.

It'll be done when it's done. It could be anywhere from a couple weeks to several months, depending on my energy levels and potentially how the upcoming semester of college goes. I'll try and post here as I get more done, though!

SPR2_PAIN and the death animation!

I opted to change SPR2_PAIN to a 5-angle sprite, even though it's asymmetrical. This probably makes the angle transition between angle 8 and angle 1 look a bit awkward, but you'd have to go pretty far out of your way to notice, so I'm not too worried about it. Sure, you can see it when you enter a Dust Devil, but that's really quick and covered up by a lot of other visual noise, so it doesn't look too off. I'm not sure I'm happy with the face I drew for SPR2_PAIN, but it's good enough, and it's at least better than the one in v1.

As for the death animation, you might have noticed i also took the opportunity to change how it works mechanically! On top of changing SPR2_DEAD to better fit with this animation, I changed how the "shrinking away" part works so that it doesn't jank out the camera.

SPNG, FALL, and SIGN! Since I've always been a lazy bastard, Pikachu's Volt Tackle, Thunder (falling), and NiGHTs sprites are all edits of SPR2_SPNG, meaning I got to knock out 4 different animations with one frame of animation and a few low-effort edits. SPR2_SIGN also got a lot bigger somehow - I'm not sure how that happened, but if BluEyes can get away with taking up the whole frame, so can Pikachu.

Also, I'm making you look at SPR2_FIRE (the dead animation) closer, because I just realized how good it turned out. "Good at drawing mortally injured rodents" will probably look good on my resumé.

Next up, the victory/parry animation and the various random sprite2s I used for it! I couldn't figure out how to get a GIF of the victory animation that didn't reduce him to a fine paste, so pretend I did that on purpose to protect against spoilers or something. Yeah. Totally.
he looks so adorbubble aaaaaaawwwwwwww what a sillly guy

I dare you to finish this before I finish my mod >:)

I think I've figured out a waiting animation I like! A puppy play bow, to show that he's more animalistic than most SRB2 characters, and a bit rambunctious while still being friendly. He's not getting impatient with you like someone like Sonic might, but he's still raring to go bust some Badniks! Featuring unworked renders that have been downscaled to SRB2 size without going through the whole process of adding the face, outlines, anti-aliasing, and general polish quite yet. I just wanted to be able to better visualize the animation for now.

Iron Tail and Double Team! With all of his ability animations out of the way, I figure I should probably bite the bullet and do the walking and running animations I've been putting off next...

I survived SPR2_RUN! I think I'll wait a bit before doing SPR2_WALK, though...

I don't think I've mentioned this, but even without the resprite, v2 would still be nearly twice as big of an update as the next largest, v1.1. It includes fixes to softlock bugs, move balance and QOL changes, better animations, new tech for advanced players, and more. One of the changes was re-compressing all of the music, which has drastically reduced the filesize - if you're dreading having to download 10 MB of music that's already on your computer just to get the new sprites, that won't be anywhere near as much of an issue.

SPR2_SKID and SPR2_ROLL (not pictured because the individual frames look too goofy - it looks better in motion, I promise) are done! I'm coming up on the last few sprites - I just need SPR2_EDGE (which I've been putting off because I need to redo the animation itself, I'm not super happy with how it looks), SPR2_RIDE (not sure how to make the animation here look better, sorry, JackalMan), SPR2_TRNS (which I forgot existed), and SPR2_WALK (The Big One). Maybe I'll add in DRWN and GASP if I'm not itching to get the update out by then.

Just as much as the sprites, I'm really happy with the gameplay changes for v2. Wanting to finally be able to publish them has been a big motivation to get these sprites done. Of course, there's the fact that Volt Tackle handles better (and looks far nicer) and Double Team causes less boss-related softlocks, but the advanced techniques are what I'm really excited about. If v2 lands like I hope it will, high-level Pikachu gameplay is going to be way more fun both to play and to watch.

SPR2_EDGE and SPR2_TRNS! Those of you keeping count (and those of you who thought to scroll up one post and do a little math) will have realized that this just leaves 2 more sprites before every sprite that was in v1 is present and accounted for. I was fully prepared to spend months upon months on this, and yet here I am, less than 3 weeks later, staring down the finish line. A little cheating goes a long way, I suppose!

For some reason, I had a really hard time thinking of what I wanted the new edge teetering animation to look like in theory, but once I got into Blender and started messing around, it clicked. You'd think I'd have made enough characters from scratch to know how my creative process works by now....

He's done!!! No more placeholders, no more disappearing face, no more awkwardly cutting back to v1 sprites. All that's left to do is re-record GIFs and make sure his post is up-to-date, and Pikachu v2 will be ready to go!

I'm really excited for this update to finally go live. Working on v2 has been most of my free time for the better part of a month, and I couldn't be happier about it. I'd like to think every second of that effort shows, both in graphics and gameplay. I'm looking forward to you all being able to play around with the new Pikachu, and I hope you all are, too!
