SA2's Green hill - stage remake. (You won't need 180 emblems to play this stage!)

Aquavine

📀🌻Frutiger Aero enjoyer :3🌻📀
I decided to remake SA2's green hill in SRB2 because it seems like a fun stage to remake and play. Play because I haven't unlocked it yet because my dark chao won't hurry up with evolving! >:C And that may create problems in the future because I only have videos and model for reference... But for now I'm focused on remaking the geometry with extreme precision and at this point it's going pretty smoothly, take a peek yourself!

I probably should nerf that ramp though.

Due to how relatively simple geometry in this stage is, I don't think it will be long until this stage is fully playable, but I'm also aiming for adding every single object in this stage and using the original SA2 textures. (Because if I didn't add the objects as they are originally I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.) And I made this thread mainly for feedback and potential help. And also because I like showcasing how much progress I've currently done on my stages.

Nicely done!

is the skybox temporary?, anyway, pretty cool!
Yes, I really don’t want to mess around with bending the thok barriers, so I put these walls as placeholders for the skybox. I will put them up after I finish the main stage layout and decide on where the skybox walls should be. And about that, should I delete the walls between the start of the stage and the ramp so you can just leap between those sections? (From 0:06 to 0:15 in the video.)

Small update: My dark chao finally evolved and with that I unlocked dark garden and the hero/dark races, I already have max stat hero chao so that leaves me with only 1 emblem left before I will gain access to green hill. :D

I started experimenting with importing textures from SA2. For now I only added the checkered dirt and grass textures and added them to first land mass as a test of how they would look in-game, and I thought the SRB2 pallete would completely annihilate the grass texture but it actually doesn't look that bad! And I remade the dirt texture because it's really simple and so I could make the colors more accurate.

I also have a life hack for adding textures outside of SRB2 and making the colors more accurate to the textures original source!
I don't have a name for this tech yet but it's pretty easy to execute. So you have a texture that looks worse with SRB2 pallete and there's no color on the pallete that makes it looks atleast close the original texture, what you can do now is choose two colors that look close to the one you need and make a 2x2 checker pattern with them. And when you're far away from the wall with your texture, the grid becomes blurry which creates an illusion of a brand new color that's nowhere to be seen in the color pallete. I showcased this effect in action in the video. :>

#IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT#
In two days from now I will enter my first year of high school and I'm 100% sure that I'll be completely flabbergasted from all the new stuff I'll have adapt to and I will have to fully lock in for maybe a week before I'll be more comfortable in my new situation and able to tense down a little.
Which will mean a sudden halt/slow down in development of this addon and I will be a bit less accessible now. :dramahog:

I'm in 10th, and all I've made is a color pack. It's not even out yet!
I guess that just depends when you started modding SRB2 and how much experience you have. For example I started mapping a year and 1 month ago but I already had experience with making maps. (In Roblox studio, since maybe 2018 :oh:) And even with already having experience, my two published maps were just straight up ports of already existing maps. (It seems there's a third one coming!)
I also don't want to take pride in fact that I may be better than other people while I'm younger then them, because that's just straight up bad, and my brain hates bad, so that's why I don't have my age shown on this site. :3 (Because I don't want to and straight up HATE the possibility of making people feel bad about themselves and their abilities. :dramahog:)
So remember that every day with every new bit of experience and spent time you are getting closer to the top of the mountain. :wonderful:
I also might be just built different. :oh:

Nah, ya good, lmao.

I also decided to apply new textures to the whole map so I won't have to grind more in the future.

Change of plans actually, I also added the side grass thingy. (It's going to be painful to do this on every slope. :<)

I will probably edit the texture too to make it merge better with the grass texture.

I also did this until I learned how to replace the color with one that is not provided

Oh... I mean that works too. But I rather do it mine way and prefer to not mess with the game itself, I just add one stage and new few textures and that’s it. The main game is completely untouched.
That’s why these are called addons and not mods. :knuxsmug:

I finally unlocked green hill which means that now I can recreate this stage more accurately to the original. :D Also it’s pretty cool that they changed the jump sfx to the classic on for this single stage.
(Also the angel chao was stupid and took the wrong fruit in that little puzzle in chao race which gave me enough time advantege to win. C:<)

So I several things I probably should worry about:
-My version is a bit more spacious compared to the original. At atleast I think so? It’s hard to tell with that janky 2.5D type camera. (Why is there no free-cam like in SA1 :c)
But it kinda feels like it’s 1x1 in scale while compare these two versions. Maybe it’s camera placement that makes it look bigger.
-Software rendering support may be kinda janky and there’s one place that might be problematic. There’s empty space through which you can the whole other half of the stage after the first set of zoom tubes. (The one with checkpoint.)

I added all sections until the first loop, (Which will be painful to make. :dramahog:) along with the new textures, side grass FOF's, crumbling blocks, some objects and the waterfall floor transition thingy. (0:22-0:25) It's kinda smart of level designers to use waterfalls to explain why the water level is randomly dropping down, this stage actually has a lot of drops and it's always going lower. It looks quite nice actually. :D

I don't know what happened to me yesterday but I know that I was extremely close to cancelling this remake. D: I realized that this stage is too wide compared to original and also a bit too low because of SRB2's low jump height and I tried to counter this by trying to remake this stage with a bit smaller scale, but that also didn't work because It was still somehow inaccurate and I was just ready to give up and write this remake off as cancelled. But I just decided to go back to the bigger version and just do some more sections just to make them without any effort and I just decided that I will finish this remake no matter how inaccurate the land shape may be. :D Atleast you can have play this stage in SRB2. (This is the curse of being a perfectionist. Getting rid of something good just because It has small flaws... AAAAAA But I'm good now :>)

I also fully set-up the level header along with perfectly looped sa2’s green hill theme. So no more gfz act 1 theme!

and also a bit too low because of SRB2's low jump height
maybe you could use a P_SKIN lump to increase everyone’s jump height
