Logan McCloud's WIP Thread

I decided to clean up base Sonic's model a little bit. Mostly stuff you won't notice, though the shoes are a little more obvious:

The base triangle count has been reduced. There were a lot of extra triangles that weren't really helping the shape all that much, particularly in the spines, so I got rid of them. You probably can't even tell and it has no impact on the animations either.
The base model has been reduced from 756 triangles to 688, bringing the models total polycount (including faces, wheel mesh, etc), from 876 to 808, which makes me happy.
I can tell the difference rightaway, like an optimized SM64 Mario model!

I know this message will get buried at some point, but seeing as I'm going to finish this pack this year, it probably won't matter lol

You guys are free to ask if I can support mods. Just as long as you know that I'm also free to say no. Please note that I'm only doing official SEGA characters. Fan Characters/OCs like Inazuma and Aether are an exception because those models are a commission. I might do more model commissions in the future, but until I finish the base pack, commissions will be closed. I also won't advertise model commissions here.

If, for whatever reason, I "disappear" again, please don't speculate on my death. It makes me really uncomfortable. Life isn't always easy for me and there are times where I have to prioritize that above this. This project is mostly something I do for fun, to practice, and to have something to show when I'm not doing NDA work.

Do you plan on supporting Team Combi-Rings' characters, the Chaotix and Ray?

I've completed most of the assets in the game.
All enemies, all gameplay assets (springs, maces etc)

All that remains is characters and bosses
that should be quick. I don't have any modelling or modding skils so honestly idk.

Will the legacy trio be included with like your 2.1 models? Or maybe it's just simpler the 2.1 models are applied to vanilla as a bonus. You're the boss.

I would absolutely love to. I love the Chaotix especially. I'm also friends with a lot of people in Team Combi-Rings (and I'm technically a member of it myself lol)

I do still have to balance life stuff. Characters are among the hardest things for me to model. Not just in terms of complexity of the model itself but making sure all the supported animations/poses are working correctly. Characters tend to involve a lot more problem solving than something like an object or an enemy and I spend a *lot* of time making sure everything feels/looks good in 3D space.

Yeah I've got the legacy trio using my 2.1 models in addition to them being a vanilla bonus skin (both cause why not lol). Though a new issue I've had is there are so many "Legacy" mods now I'm starting to lose track of which is which lol

Greetings friends. It has been almost 2 years since I last worked on anything SRB2 related. I got a new job, moved to a new place, but that doesn't matter here. What matters is that I'm picking things up again. And I want to try to finish this pack this year.

First thing I did to get the rust off was... make another Sonic.

Modern Sonic specifically. He's styled after Unleashed/Generations both in terms of looks and animations. His body shading is a little bit softer than most of my character models, mostly because I thought it worked better for the style, though I may still change it to be more in line with my other models. He's still unfinished, his hands aren't done yet, I don't have any trick frames yet, but I'm happy with how he looks. His model currently sits at a total of 781 triangles, well within my expected triangle budget.

Speaking of low polycounts, I decided to clean up base Sonic's model a little bit. Mostly stuff you won't notice, though the shoes are a little more obvious:

The spines are where I can't notice any difference, lol
Nice to see that the show's back on the road! You've taken this long, no issue with taking as much time as you need to comfortably get this done.

After 5 years of putting it off, Eggman begins

No textures yet, I like to test this stuff in-game before I commit since textures are the most labor intensive part:

"he's back..." "he's back!" "HE'S BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!"- Agent stone (congrats on your new job btw)

The model pack has definitely come a long way, so it would be nice to see it finished (though we understand that you are not being paid to do this so no rush).

I do wonder though, is it still common for SRB2 model makers to continue in the use of Mischief Modeler or Maverick Modeler or is there a plugin out there that now allows people to use the newer versions of Blender for the job (since the supported format is an older one and is no longer the format of choice for most engines)?

Agree, it'll be nice to finally let people use these models once I'm finished.

For the record, I have always used Blender for my models even for my md2 models back in SRB2 2.1. It's just better software in every way even before the Blender 2.8 update vastly improved Blender itself. For most of the development of this pack I was using a privately rebuilt add-on that let me export md3s with the proper naming conventions in-tact, but a few years ago some members of the modeling community made their own public add-on that functions identical to mine based on my descriptions of my private addon, but without the bugs mine had, so I just use that now instead. I currently use Blender 3.6 for the model pack.

The add-on is available here

Once my model pack is finished I plan to also release all my source files so people can poke around and see how I did certain things.
