Any interesting stories behind the creation of your Sonic OCs?

I'm sure that if you're here of all places, then it's safe to assume that you've made a Sonic OC at least once at some point. I know I'm no different. So, I'm curious as to what spawned the ideas for some of you guys' OCs. For me, I only have one that stuck around in my mind all these years, named Drago the Cat.

I was in 3rd or 4th when I made him back in, like 2010 to 2012, somewhere around there. I remember trying to make him seem like he could actually fit in the Sonic universe, since a lot of OCs I saw at the time were just so out there that at a glance, you could instantly tell the difference between a fan made character, and an official one. As for why he's a black cat, it's literally just because at the time, I had a black cat named Cowbin.

Way back in the mid-2000's I made a really shitty Sonic recolor that was darker blue with a green beanie, I called him Neon. It's pretty embarrassing to remember. I had a school friend at the time who had a Shadow recolor that was white with yellow stripes that he called Ace. Back in the early days of Youtube back when friending people was a thing, we used to have this ongoing back and forth fanfic RP we would PM to each other as our characters. Thinking about it these days kinda makes me cringe.

i have a hefty story... so... uh...

wayyy back when sonic forces was coming out and i heard i could make my own sonic character, i was HYPED but i didnt have an OC at the time. so i searched "(insert my real name here) the hedgehog" on google because i was lazy and didnt want to make my own OC like a smart person. and i found a green hedgehog with blue fore-head hair (you know like the stuff that tails has sticking out his fore-head?) and blue shoes. i put it as the wallpaper of my ipad so i wouldnt forget. around a year later im in the car with my mom. i sudden feel the urge to change my sonic OC. so i asked mom what color he should be and what accessory he should have. he came out a white sonic recolor with... get this, a purple backpack! this ended up being how i would represent myself in srb2 at this time. months later, i get a hankering for another redesign. this time, fluffy the fluffhog was going to be my OC! a blue hedgehog with a red bandana! but, it didnt quite stick after a while. i then have a dream that included a certain hedgehog. speedy the hedgehog! a blue hedgehog, that had no legs, (his feet just sat below his torso. it wasnt a rayman moment.) and a red ring around his eyes! finally, a remotely good design! but then i got bored, said fuck it, and made him a normal hedgehog. AKA a brown sonic. after that, i once again got bored and made him a yellow hedgehog with blue shoes. he now had electricity abilities! and this stuck for a while. until recently when i redesigned him for the last time. he was a normal hedgehog, with a blue backpack! (coming soon to srb2 clients near you.)

 

[Basic Bronze Sonic]

I saw that Metal Sonic turned bronze in SRB2 when he goes super and I thought to myself that it looks more like a Metal Sonic recolor but then I wanted to make a Sonic OC and I knew that I was terrible at drawing so made the Metal Sonic recolor that I use as my php Basic Bronze Sonic, it's not extremely long or anything but it's still something.

I have a sorta in-storage OC that spawned from a discussion about how Krono Sonic, with it's design alterations, could benefit more as an OC.

I wound up combining a line from that discussion with Sonic prototype stuff.

The only "original character" I have made for the Sonic universe, per se, is Jetty-Syn Proto, for the 2.1 mod of the same name.

The mod's core gameplay was mostly in place before I had come up with any visual concepts -- the earliest prototype of the character was codenamed "Hotrod", whose sole weapon was a limited-range flamethrower. Flames were too visually noisy, so I changed the projectiles into bullets, while still keeping limited range and rapid fire intact.

I needed an easy base to work off of at the time, and thematically a Jetty-Syn busting up robots helped bring out a rogue / anti-hero quality to the character that made its motives and alliance more ambiguous. The character being a "prototype" robot model was an easy rationalization for why the character had limited jetpack flight, and also for how it could obtain jet fuel from other robots. The mod's gameplay would continue develop alongside and in response to the character design, and the character would face off against tougher rival Jetty-Syns that would warp to Proto's location in ambush.

It's really not the most impressive visual design; the character was definitely made with "gameplay first" in mind, and I think some of the spritework really reflects that. At the same token, the core concept of a bipedal jetty-syn with handguns is fun enough that I guess it still holds up pretty well.

Batch was literally born as a full on oc thanks to SRB2, although I have yet to make proper art of him. He started as a "name.exe has stopped working" joke, but eventually someone was like "haha Leeko.exe" noting the resemblence to Sonic.exe, so I changed it to Leeko.bat to avoid this. Eventually, I got into srb2 roleplay servers, and last april fools, I renamed myself Leeko.bat for the joke, even changing my skincolor from black to carbon.


And then I kept it like that. Got into character. I had already been developing him as a background character for Leeko's lore, but now? His time in the spotlight was there. I've developed his personality a bit, but he's still got a lot of work to do.

So yeah. Batch. Android who runs on a batch file. Still in beta, like any indev program.

My OC, Charter the Bilby, was initially based off of a bottle lamb that we had. We had a tradition of naming each bottle lamb a variation of Charlie (Charles, Charlene, Charlotte, etc.) and I came up with Charter one day. I really liked the name, so I stuck with it

My OC Steel the meerkat became a concept around 2017 and indeed, he did start out as a Sonic OC. I already had a character beforehand who started out as a pony, evolving to a human after I lost interest in the show over time, and now translated the design into a furry character. The main drive behind him was the species. I've seen thousands of cats, foxes, hedgehogs and occasionally animals I've never heard about, but never any meerkats. I imagine if I went to search for those on purpose I could find some meerkat OCs, but nothing ever popped out on its own around the places and artists I frequent.

Eventually as my art skills progressed I abandoned the noodle Sonic proportions, and went on to make some form of an avatar character to make drawings of. I don't have a whole lot of lore as I'm not entirely sure where it would even be set in, so currently he exists in a bit of a vacuum. Maybe eventually I'll think something up, who knows? I definitely get some small ideas here and there. Here is the most recent reference for anyone interested:

I went to go play smash and I saw the cyan sonic alt. Then I decided to base my OC off of him. boom! Even though my OC isn't *that* original. I still like it nonetheless. Ok.
So i've had an idea when going to my school, that was to make a Female Wolf Sonic OC with hair style based on Astro Boy. That's what i had in mind. I've did some drawings of her first when i've was endway through the school time. And then it looked kinda crap. Her eyes looked more chinese than she's now and they were small. Also se had no clothes more than her blue two color shoes (Like Tails's). Then i've decided to make a "definitive" for that moment drawing, And it turned out really well. I've posted it on Twitter and then someone named Nicoxxla made some sprite art for my character. Days later, i've had another OC idea, it was a brown duck named Falo. And then another Original Character inspired by Skip, and then a few others like some russian hedgehog girl with typical russian outfit. And a really G A Y I OC based on a tutorial video i've watched on a sir instructing how to make Sonic OCs. Below is the latest drawing i've made of my main Sonic Original Character. Edit: Forgot to point out that i've often imagine Noire being on SRB2 as an character Add-On.

Tried to go for an Idea on a Sonic OC in Stick Nodes, of course I went to create one, it didn't go so well. It was about multiple attempts that didn't look as great as they did. I decided to let one of my friends to make a new one because why not, and it looked flawless, it was used for many months, and now I just don't think it looked as good as it used to, I might probably do a redesign of it soon, as long as I learn to create a new stickfigure.
