Uh, oops. I screwed up?

Err, I mean, you obviously missed the subtle hints I laid out that Tangle's passion to win her drinking contest with Whisper made her chug down so much Soda it made her barf it out, hence why she escaped it's side effects.
I'm a brilliant story teller, I never make mistakes.

Yeah, really sucks about the slow down. I feel a little unsure what to do about it since there's more updates coming that will probably make things even more unstable.

Yeah, sorry, Sol Sestancia 3 is still on a break, especially considering I'm really worried what all these updates are doing to the level mods.
For the moment I'm just doing the planning, scriptwriting and collecting required material, not any real work done.

Considering Goldenshine's working on that Rails add-on at the moment, figured I should at least make a level with that gimmick in it to practice using it for Sol Sest 3, so at least I'm doing SOMETHING at the moment. Although gotta wait until Shine officially releases the rails until I can finish and release the level.

tbf I probably wouldn't remember placing an important story character as a cameo 4 years before they became important either.

plus tangle seems to be normal in the science fair level (that I totaly didn't forget about when going back through part one), so the "barf it out" bit would make sense.

OOOOORRRRRR maybe the soda is only contaminated with the mind control serum in some of the bottles, which would explain why only some people get hypnotized immediately after drinking it while others seem to act normal despite being seen drinking it multiple times. explaining why tangle never got hypnotized, alongside a few others that I assume also drank the soda at some point.

so I assume it goes as so: tangle enters a drinking contest against whisper (where she's the only one actually participating in), chugs down so much soda it makes her barf it out, notices some people acting strange and all "obey eggman" and stuff, decides to go to the science fair to sleuth around, assumes you're under and plays it cool to no get found out, (I think she meets up with the chaotix, but I could be wrong about that) she finds out that eggman has taken over the monarchy (and probably that you also haven't been brainwashed yet), flees to the forest, then the freedom fighters eventually find her and she is brought to knothole, where she (I assume goes looking to see if you're still ok... and yeah, a long ass headcanon about a fictional character

now that I have the chance, I have a question... in SS1, fang is treated as part of the main ensemble, he is mentioned as an enemy of state and is included in the wanted screens on SS1's version of uptown, but has had said reference removed in SS2's version of uptown. and now I wonder, what happened to retcon fang out of the cast

Did I only notice that Roger sometimes uses the same models of characters like tangle is the same in ss1 and ss2

this has been bugging me for a while, but why is the anti-brainwashing signal called a "mind control" signal? I'm just curious because...

"Mind control (also known as brainwashing, coercive persuasion or thought control) means trying to control other people's beliefs and behaviors.
In this process, a person or group persuades others to change their basic beliefs and values. They may use unethical methods and manipulation, which often harms the people being manipulated."

-Wikipedia

so, does that mean that the people who've been hypnotized into believing Eggman propaganda been double hypnotized into being normal? is it a british thing, or am I looking too deep into the wording of a fan made campaign for a kids game (lets be honest it's the third one)

I'd never use "it's for kids" as an excuse for bad writing.
My excuse for bad writing is that I am a bad writer.

The whole brainwashing soda stuff feels so random because it was just a cute quick plotpoint to add context to a single level I wanted to make.
Before it ballooned into the Sol Sestancia it is today.
I guess I never put much thought into it and just took it on face value since it was there from the beginning.
So at this moment, I have no idea how it actually works.

I suppose if I have to come up with a serious answer now on the spot, it works like a psychoactive drug, just putting people in a more mellow state of mind where they take things on face value and easily go along with Eggman's propagenda. I mean, it's not just the soda, the island is full of posters and tv programms pumping out Obey Eggman messages. The Soda just helps people not questioning it.

....of course that doesn't click with how the effects were portrayed in the pre-school cutscenes, so err....

And that doesn't explain why I use the terms brainwashing and mind-control indiscriminately.
Well, for that I refer to my original point; I'm a bad writer. Going more with vibes then carefully thought out plot.

So yeah, I'm sure there's a few plot holes and awkward story beats that I may have to iron out in part 3.
I can always blame it on the characters misusing the terms and throw them under the bus for my own mistakes.

tbh I have no issue with the whole brainwashing soda thing, I was more so questioning why Rotor called the signal a "mind control" tape

Well, same answer, because I use the terms indiscriminately because I'm a doofus.

Didn't put much thought into what the tape does other then have an excuse to have a TV studio stage.
Probably just interrupts the OBEY EGGMAN messaging and give people enough of a break to regain their senses.
So not really literally "mind-control" no.

I'll just say Rotor wanted to give a more complex technical explanation. Then considered his audience might not understand and quickly decided to dumb down the specifics for better communication.
And accidentally used the wrong terminology because he's not good at improvising.

Does that work?

yeah. I can see him taking something like an anti-propaganda tape, try to make it sound more advanced, realize the player probably wouldn't understand, then simplified it while accidentally using the wrong terminology because he's not good at improvising.
although maybe he believed that the signal would have people's control over their minds be given back and called it that because it puts people's MINDs back into the CONTROL of the people that Eggman brainwashed.
and like, nobody questioned him so it's likely they also understood what he meant

bringing it up now, but I meant by a "kids game" I was talking about base Srb2 (the most mature it got was greenflower city, but that was retconned)
but I also said it because the conclusion I was starting to get to was that Eggman was harming anyone who continued to contest him even after drinking the soda. but then again, that does seem like something Eggman would do

I might sound like a huge douche by saying all of this but I'm noticing that a lot of the critiques the mod gets stem from "I sucked at this part so therefore it's the game's fault and not my failure to simply adapt in a game where the whole story revolves around being on the run from an entire empire." In my opinion, the level design in this entire mod is a whole lot more memorable than most OLDC levels I've played, like.. I actually remember where I'm supposed to be. I dunno, it just sucks seeing such an impeccable experience be brought down.

Before anyone says anything, no this isn't an excuse to regard all criticism towards this mod as "invalid" or "wrong". You are entitled to your opinion and I can't do anything about that. It's just the reasoning behind it all that rubs me the wrong way.

so far, my only issue is the continued use of that badnik that travels in a line and snipes you, the fact that the first level crashes in multiplayer, robotropolis lagging on my shitty poorly rated computer, that one bit when escaping the palace with the lasers because I keep hitting them it it always breaks my flow, the fact the glass in the "you die, eggman wins" section only works properly if you enter on the chair, the fact people were upset about how the protagionist was made to be able to be any character (addon or not) while still having it make sense, and also the fact the swamp is pretty much overlooked after the first level despite how SS1 ended with the implication that it would've had a bigger role.

but other than that, I still really like the pack and a lot of roger's other works

Yeah, I feel like I've seen a few cases where an OLDC mapper started out with some unique map design that might've been a bit chunky to navigate, but then showed up to newer OLDC rounds with more homogenized designs as a result of critique/criticism. I don't believe it's done on purpose, but playing through a collaborative pack where a lot of the entries flow too similarly in a gameplay loop can result in a mind-numbing effect where the individual entries are less likely to stand out among each other.
So, yeah, I think I've already said my piece here about what I enjoy SolSest for, so I'll just reiterate that I'll happily take more of it, quirks and flaws and all :P

the fact people were upset about how the protagionist was made to be able to be any character (addon or not) while still having it make sense
People were upset about that? I'm just happy that Roger went to all the work to make a voice acted adventure-comedy story in an expansive SRB2 mod. And I like that you can choose any character for it - it holds way more replayability to go into it with a whole roster of differing moveset mechanics. So all I can say to that complaint is - "So what? Just enjoy the fun."
