Things in video games you're tired of seeing

There was a thread similar to this on Facepunch, except it was related to firearms. I guess it'll make more sense to make the topic more diverse. Basically, what are some things you're tired of seeing in video games?

I'm personally sick of seeing Desert Eagles in shooters, and if I run into a game with one again, I'm making a rant thread about it at some random place until I get tired, say "fuck it", and continue on with my day.

Hm...I guess I am tired of seeing:

Linearity ( especially in Sonic games): The problem with Sonic games these days is that while they focus more on speed, that's all they do, they do not take into account of making 3D sonic games more Exploration based. Take for instance Sonic Unleashed, sure it had great day time stages; But they were pretty straight and walled in, making it just "Go straight and boost" rather than platforming. If Sega/Sonic Team took time to perfect an engine making a Non-linear Sonic game possible, it would be great. Sure, it would be slightly harder and longer, but it would make the game more fun and entertaining in the long run.

Too many similar FPS's: Now I have nothing against this genre or it's fans, but it always seems that they all look the same, play the same, and never offer anything new or interesting. It's usually always about a War, And usually always has a similar set of weapons ( smg, shotgun, sniper, etc.).

I know I sound a bit..."ridiculous" about this, but there must be other people who agree with me on this right? I am also saying while I don't hate FPS' I do dislike the constantly same theme of each one.

Casual Games / "Innovation" Using Games (Wii) : I just can't shake off my hatred of when Nintendo thinks "Motion Control is what EVERYONE likes!". I mean, sure, when using it in moderation it's a good thing ( or still a bad thing, your choice) but I just hate how they still think using the Gimmick of Motion Control in outside of the box ways is what everyone will like.

On the other side, is the Casual Games, When we look at it; Casual games probably fill the aisle of Wii games when you just want a good solid adventure game; not a bunch of bland Party games. There are a few cases where a casual game actually turns out better than originally thought of, but that's it, a few cases it does happen, not all the time.

I don't think there is anything left right now, I'll keep thinking of what I am tired of seeing...

Game Over? In all seriousness, I'm not a fan of forced tutorials. Not only do I sometimes read the manual in my leisure, but I also pride myself on usually being able to figure an intuitive game out without the game babysitting me. Of course, if there must be a tutorial mission, I'd prefer it be short and sweet.

Other than that, I really don't like stalemate encounters. It really bugs me when the boss stretches for hours simply because neither of you can do any lasting damage. If I can't win, then I want an abrupt and ruthless defeat to send me reeling back to the drawing board.

This may not technically be something "in" a video game, but I'm absolutely sick of seeing the rights to use characters who have starred in epic games get sold by the developers to other companies. Crash and Spyro? What the hell happened to them?

I agree that a lot of FPS's are basically the same game. I do not agree with your specific complaints. FPS's use a war as a setting because it means there will be a lot of action, which is the point of the series, and the standard FPS firearms are just what people expect. It would be a little weird if you played an FPS game that had no form of shotgun.

Spyro and Crash, well, Insomniac left, and Radical Entertainment took over. (Respectively)

That's just Spyro. In Crash's case, Naughty Dog left, Traveler's Tales made one game which was still pretty good, then Vicarious Visions wrecked him.

Actually, there's a chance I might end up getting an internship with Vicarious Visions in a couple years, because of their connections to my college. I may have to bite my tongue as far as that opinion is concerned.

I am so freaking tired of seeing rings and coins! Seriously, they look so basic and you hear their noise over and over, if only because you just can't avoid them! *brutally murdered by the Sonic and Mario communities*

But yeah, forced tutorials are increndibly annoying. I'm also tired of most games' online communities, at least 95% of them are made of utter retards.

Like this one? *murdered by community*

In all seriousness, I absolutely can't stand linear games. I like games that allow you to roam around and explore, like, for exampl,e Spider Man 2. Or even Sonic Robo Blast 2. Sure there isn't as much ability to roam around in two-dimensions as there are in three dimensions, but just think about what a good freeroamer could do to a major series like Sonic, or hell, even Crash Bandicoot.

Another thing I absolutely hate is all these overused gimmick games. Why do games need such a big gimmick, like Werehogs or partying? Sure, every once in a while a gimmick game comes out that people enjoy, but look what Sonic and Crash (for example) are doing. They are both switching to gimmicks that nooner likes: Mutant riding and various storyboook gimmicks. Sure, there are some fans, such as myself, as I enjoy Crash of the Titans, but still, overusing a gimmick is a waste of money, and time, for both sides (the makers and the buyers).

Did Nuke Dukem have a war tacked on? Hell, did Metroid Prime have a war tacked on? Well in Metroid's case.... it depends on how you look at that.

But that was not cool man. FPSes do not need to be war simulation games. You could easily make an FPS that isn't focused on a war. In fact I don't rememberDoom ever having war in the equation.

Beyond this everyone is saying what I hate that is being done and not being done. I am happy that people are with me when I say that Sonic games aremore one dimensional than even three dimensional.

Linearity in puzzle games.

"Can't figure this one out? Have fun NOT PLAYING THE GAME then!"

this whole war games shit. I mean its fun for a while but it's all I hear from everyone nowadays. HUR DUR Call Of Duty HUR DUR Wii is gay DERP. Remeber when the popular games were original?

It´s not like they have much of an option, the Desert Eagle is the world´s most powerful Semi-Automatic handgun in service, the only other gun that can be compared to it is the .500 Smith & Wesson Revolver, it may be slightly stronger than the Desert Eagle (it´s a revolver), but it can only carry 5 shots, plus, the difference in power is not that much, I prefer having 7+1 shots than only 5.

What I´m tired of is that games are made for a too specific public, dude, look at all those FPS games that keep being for adults and have all that ¨Realism Stuff¨, and when games are for teens, they limit it too much. I miss things like Doom, dang dude, Doom makes a great T rated game, with M content, if there were more ¨freely rated¨ games like those world would be better.

Escort missions and underwater levels. I think those are pretty self explanatory.

I am disgusted by corridor shooters. More specifically, shooter games that are based on your skills with the controller. How well you can circle strafe, how good your aim is, and your ability to make decisions reaaallly quickly. I prefer shooter games which focus on strategic approaches to situations.

Epic Games has produced fine examples of each. Unreal is a twitch shooter. Gears is more strategic. I avoid Unreal, but love Gears.

I'm probably just preaching to the choir, but I never used to hate quick-time events. Then I played the PS3 / XBOX 360 flavor of Sonic Unleashed...

Personally, I always hated QTEs. It's probably number 1 on my list of things in games that I completely despise. Other things that come to mind are random battles in RPGs (it's 2010 already; Chrono Trigger got rid of that shit 15 years ago) and situations where you're forced to open the menu screen over and over again to do the same thing (such as opening the menu in OoT's Water Temple around 500 times to equip/unequip the iron boots).

Jesus Christ, I cannot stand the amount of Linearity in games. The least they could do is add a free-roaming choice instead of having to go through short levels ridiculously fast.

Twinsanity was a good example of the games I like.
