Sonic Origins released. What are your thoughts?

I've played around with it a bit. Lots of people are saying they are disappointed, but honestly I'm pretty happy with it. I do have some nitpicks, such as there being split modes (Anniversary and Classic) instead of just toggle options for widescreen and lives. However, for the most part the collection is exactly what I expected it to be and more. I find the rates of gaining coins and the prices in the museum to be very fair, and while a lot of people are saying they don't like the new versions of the prototype tracks in Sonic 3, I think they sound fine. I do still overall feel as though the collection is a bit on the expensive side for what it's offering, so anyone who's not bought it yet should probably wait for a sale. Other than that though, this is a really neat collection with lots of really cool features.

I will say this much though, S3AIR in my opinion is still the better way to play Sonic 3&K, and the recent delistings making it much harder to install it legally still puts a really bad taste in my mouth. My inner games preservationist is also still rather unhappy about the legacy versions of these games no longer being available to obtain legally on PC.

Finally, at least your being happy about the game, I have not play the game myself but I saw some videos, the game is good, I like the story mode the cutscenes and the animation, also the mission mode and I like how you use the dropdash to. But I don't like how Sega delete all the 4 classic Sonic game on stream and Sonic origins have in higher price and the dlc.

Deadsky

Im noone that matters
I find it an pretty good collection
The animations are beautiful too
My only nitpick is the new prototype super music
It really seems like whoever made those really doesnt take the genesis synth seriously

I am not stupid even tho my name is DaStupidSonic
I still don't have the game yet but seeing a wide-screen version of Sonic 3 and Knuckles that is NOT Sonic 3 AIR is pretty okay to me. It's just I don't like the Sonic and Knuckles Collection Soundtrack. Why? Because it doesn't sound good at all. I didn't like the original Sonic and Knuckles Collection Soundtrack at all but Sonic Origins made it WORSE. I don't like how it sounds with SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive Soundfont but there is one version which is SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive Styled that I like and it's... The 1993 Sonic 3 Prototype Soundtrack.

I like the new widescreen mode, smoother special stages, and the addition of missions and coins to purchase those extras or retry special stages makes the games infinitely more enjoyable and more replayable

Not a huge fan of the prototype tracks, even more so these new updated prototype tracks, but I guess that was needed to avoid MJ copyright issues

I'm fine with it overall, just wish the MJ tracks situation was handled better or if there was a way to keep the tracks in the game, that's where mods come in I suppose.

I already wasn't planning on buying it for PC due to it being packaged with DRM, but I'm also seeing a number of complaints on how the title screen runs, and knowing how outdated my PC is, I'm absolutely sure mine would tank. Unfortunately it also sounds like modding is going to be much more difficult as well since the developers insisted on using the CriWare engine.

That being said, I've been learning about so many poor design decisions, bugs and lack of polish for Origins that it's pretty much turned me away from buying it at all.

I don't really like Origins alot cause No Playable Amy, S3&K prototype soundtrack, and the fact you have to pay for the digital deluxe version just to get missions.

morally lacking motivation
have only seen the game through watching one of my friends play it at the moment, but the cutscenes inbetween the games are all cute, especially sonic CD's ones, other than the reused prototype music for sonic 3 sounding a bit ass it's an alright celebratory game

Conceptually I actually prefer the Prototype soundtrack, partially because it's stylistically consistent with the rest of the soundtrack, but also because its Act 2s are more fleshed out. Some of the prototype tracks may not have received the level of polish that they would have if they had continued on into the final build, and they're even less developed in Origins due to Jun relying strictly on converting the PC Collection MIDIs into chiptune format without further modifications. What can be said about the MJ tracks is that they are very distinct in their sound, and I'm sure people will continue to find them memorable for that reason alone, which is valid.

Compositionally the new super music isn't terrible either (although it's way too short), but it's infuriating to me how obvious it is that this particular track is just a MIDI wrapped in a Sonic 2 soundfont, and it sounds insultingly unprofessional. I blasted Jun for this on social media, but given how obviously rushed and mismanaged the development of Origins was, I should have been blaming SEGA's upper management for failing to hire a sound programmer experienced with the Genesis synthesizer, and to give them the proper amount of time to translate everything into chiptune and to further polish the replacement tracks.

I do generally get the feeling as though the new tracks sound out of place, even the "finished" prototype tracks. While IMO they generally sound fine, they don't fit in with the rest of S3&K's OST in regards to style while the unfinished prototype tracks actually do, and the melody sounds a bit muted in some of the tracks. Super Sonic's new theme sounds to me like it's using Sonic 4's soundfont, and at times uses a similar composition structure to the tracks from those games.

Stealth actually went on something of a rant about SEGA's crunch culture and the issues that appeared in the game after his team submitted their builds, and it's quite head scratching that such a thing happened. It feels to me like something fundamental has changed within SEGA between 2017 and now for the worse.

Poor thoughts overall, the music choices for S3 levels and the myriad of bugs and softlocks dont make Origins looks too good on launch

Sure there are hiccups on launch but this should have been a simple port with a few extras.

I have seen some cool new stuff they added for Sonic 3 and the additonal modes look cool. For those reasons, i DO want to get it and support Headcanon's work but only when it goes on sale.

What makes the Sonic 3 music situation worse is that he didn't just use PC Collection MIDIs... he had to use earlier versions of the prototype tracks, as proven by several pieces of evidence.

He got double screwed over.

The other changes to S3K are really neat, though, and I'm considering backporting them to the original ROM whereever possible.

Although it's certainly not perfect, I've been enjoying it.
Got the world record as Sonic in Boss Rush for Sonic 1 and Sonic 2.

Congrats!
Thank you! Beat my previous record in Sonic 2 by 10 seconds...
