Sonic MVD (Multiversal Discovery)

Status
Not open for further replies.
Sonic MVD (Multiversal Discovery)'s a massive project, it contains several new elements. New story, new stages, new main gimmick. The main gimmick's basically Time Travelling. This massive project's been in-development, almost a year. Now, things started to change very differently, Sonic MVD's been going to a whole new path. New stages, as well as reprised stages. You'll see what the reprised stages are...

NOTE: Current Stages.
-- This mod contains 13 stages:
- Tropical Coast Zone. (Beginning Stage)
- Chemical Industry Zone. (Second Stage)
- Atlantic Tempest Zone. (Third Stage)
- Mythical Forest Zone. (Fourth Stage)
- Royal Castle Zone. (Fifth Stage)
- Arctic Hillside Zone. (Sixth Stage)
- Relic Ruins Zone. (Seventh Stage)
- Quartz Quadrant Zone. (Eighth Stage)
- Western Desert Zone. (Ninth Stage)
- Magma Caverns Zone. (Tenth Stage)
- Stratospheric Palace Zone/Mountainous Garden Zone. (Eleventh Stage)
- Astral Station Zone. (Twelfth Stage)
- Station's Core Zone. (Thirteenth Stage)
- Mystic Moon Zone. (Extra - Fourteenth Stage)
- Cosmic Hub Zone. (Extra - Fifteenth Stage)
NOTE: This would be actually finalized.
-- This project also contains new Special Stages. They're basically inspired from Sonic the Hedgehog: CD.
- You basically have to track down the UFOs just to meet it's requirement. There are three types of UFO's.
1) Super Ring (UFO) - You track down this UFO. You gain 10 Rings per-UFO.
2) Speed Boost (UFO) - You track down this UFO. You gain some speed.
3) Extra Time (UFO) - This UFO gives you Extra Time, by default it's 30s per-UFO.
- These are only designed as Multiplayer Special Stages. Now, you get to run automatically thanks to the autorun script!
-- Time Stones are actually included in this game, obviously.
  1. Tropical Coast Zone (Act I - [PRESENT])
    attachment.php
  2. Tropical Coast Zone (TCZ - Act I [PAST])
    attachment.php
NOTE: All of this would be updated.
-- Sonic MVD (Multiversal Discovery) would contain 2 alternative soundtracks.
Would probably be set up in 2 separate methods as the following says:
A) Make it as a music replacement of the Current.
B) Just duplicate the same file, however said alternative soundtrack'll be added.

Want to help us? Let me know!
We'd highly appreciate it if we get more help, to complete this project and release it to the Message Board. About the filesize, it's skyrocketing up to 400 MB. Yes, you heard me. 400 MB. You might have to wait 1/2 years so I could probably release this mod, however prototypes are getting released every month. Once again, if you want to help us. Let me know.

400mb sounds excessive. What did you do to get to that number!?
If it's music, remember that you can compress the music and set looping points to have it be somewhere around 2mb each.

You can compress it to a 0 quality ogg, you know?
With all the noise from ambient... noise, the player ability sound and the like, you wouldn't even notice the difference. You don't need the music to sound super clean for a mod.
If it's custom music you can... just bundle a separate download.

Plus, you're just bloating the filesize of your mod.

\mfw 400mb srb2 mod and its not even bigger than srb2 the past

LOL imagine 1 gb

Yes, it's the music. I set the Quality to 10 just so it could sound clean.

compressing .ogg files doesn't actually do a lot to the quality. through audacity, i've exported the quality at 1 before and it has had comparable quality to the original. having it at max quality just bloats the filesize for no reason, which isn't ideal, since the mb's upload limit for .pk3 and .zip files are 8 megabytes.

that being said, i like the idea you've proposed so far. you seem to have some knowhow around mapping, and the stage list is impressive...but it does seem like you're biting off more than you can chew. from what i can comprehend, you're attempting to put in at least two versions of over ten stages, which is definitely a huge undertaking. not saying it's impossible, but it's something you'd need a huge team of people to produce over a long time period.
regardless, i like what you have, your level looks impressive so far.

Because 200mb for a mod is kind of excessive and it has to be discussed. we're not even spamming
ffoxD is even showcasing what exactly causes such bloat in the SRB2 Discord, and it's more or less... mesmerizing.

You *have* to compress your things!
Music quality does not matter in-game, as quality variance is almost impossible to notice when things are happening on screen.
You also have to compress your sounds for the same reason.
You can use PNG flats and textures (2.2 allows PNG textures to be used) to reduce them to a very manageable size as well. Consider that this community asset pack, sporting a whooping 3k texture count, doesn't even exceed 20mb.

200mb is around the size of a decent full game on Steam. It's very weird to see that number be the size of a mod - an indev mod at that.

Also, there's not much to go off from the original post. All you've shown is two gifs of two distinct levels, which do look quite cool and I'd love to see more, but the rest of the post sounds like hypotheticals for the project.
There's not much to say about it other than "wowee that's big"?

It looks interesting. Everyone and their grandma has mentioned the excessive music file size and i agree, consider compressing it.

All i can say is Good luck because it looks REALLY ambitious.

Theres a trend of people making overly ambitious plans but not actually meeting it to the end. But prehaps you can break that trend.

Technically, I would've uploaded more but there was some sort of error in the middle of uploading more gifs.

Oh. If you played the beta from his server he actually has most of the stages made currently. He's only showing gifs of one for... some reason.

This isn't a project he's started now. It's been about a year in the making.

That's because there was an error mid-uploading more attachments. Don't get me wrong, it actually wasn't my fault at only uploading 2 GIFs.
