I really need to make a guide on how to properly adjust controls anyways, so, here's an indepth guide. I'll probably post this somewhere else public, but otherwise, some of this crap you may already know, I dunno. :\
Basically, you want something comfortable and efficient. Mouselook and Strafing are two powerful kinds of controls that can come in handy in any gametype you play, but some retard didn't set the default mousespeed or controls to be comfortable OR efficient to use it, so, new users are stuck with crap.
So ya, liek, first, mouselook. Go to Options > Mouse Options. Enable all three first settings, and then take a look at the mouse speeds. Mousespeed is x speed, while Mouselook is y speed, so they're pretty easy to adjust to your liking. You'll want to set these speeds relatively high, but not max; if they're too slow, you won't be able to turn fast enough (and you'll have to keep raising the mouse to stay on the mouse pad), but if you go too fast, you won't be able to control yourself at all.
Play with that a bit. Got it to your liking? Cool.
Now, the keys. You've probably heard of the WASD control scheme; if not, here's a simple explanation. W and S are forward and backwards, while A and D are for strafing. You'll be able to set these up easily in Options > Setup Controls > Player 1 Controls. Also, while you're there, I'd recommend changing Ring Toss, Spin Jump, and Spin Dash controls to Mouse1, Mouse2, and Mouse3 buttons, respectively. If you don't have a third mouse button, then I guess you'll have to improvise.
Move around a bit now. Shoot, jump, spin, strafe, all that good stuff. If you got yourself comfortable, then you're basically set. Now, if you want to go even further, then I've got plenty of control setting ideas.
'Kay. Let's assume what you're going to do ingame. Turn off mouselook? Check. Toss the flag or lightdash? Check. Take snaps, end the game, and exitlevel? Possibly. Let's get to the definite uses first.
Assuming you use the mouse with your right hand and WASD with your left hand, you've got a lot of space and versatility. Now, if you can add some more keys by your WASD setting, it should still stay comfortable, depending on where those keys are placed. Personally, I have Mouselook (mouselook off, in this case - we still have automlook on, so the effects are reversed) as the Left Shift key, so it's easy to just keep it help down; as for light dash, E. Not a letter you'd reach for often in this setup, but it's close enough to press when you need it.
As for keys like Screenshot and Endgame, you'd best put them in a place where you can't reach unless you took your hand off the WASD/mouse. Ins and End are ideal, for instance.
If you want to get really kooky, add some scripts! I have a freakin' library in my autoexec.cfg, the most highly used commands being character switches (1 - Sonic, 2 - Tails, 3 - Knuckles, etc.), ring toggle (space switches between normal ring and special ring for the Mouse1 button), and camchase toggle with J. I ought to release a modified version of a script, in case anyone wanted to use some ideas.
But anyways, that's about it. I hope it came in handy. Just play around with your controls a bit if that doesn't satisfy you.
