Okay. I use the third person spread controls;

Z - Jump
X - Lightdash
A - Ring Throw
S - Ring Throw (Normal)
Shift - Spin
Arrow Keys - Movement

I SUCK. I lose a lot, and I feel like such a pathetic loser in netgames (specifically Match and Race). I can't use mouselook, because I don't know how (I use a laptop, but I have a mouse... I just don't know how to use that damned looking with the mouse).

HELP. PLEASE. I'M BEGGING YOU.

Btw, I get an average score of 300 in Match. That's not good, is it?

I have my keys more toward the bottom right of my keyboard, I get a decent score in match and I'm able to move fast in race.

Arrow keys - movement
. - Jump
/ - spin
l - ring toss
; - ring toss normal
' - light dash
Right alt - strafe

Right, with that being said, I also have a little mouse pad right next to my computer which I use for mouse looking/shooring/strafing.

300 average? Depends on who you're playing against.

As far as your controls go: You need to use a mouse.

I use these controls:

Left Click = Shoot
Right Click = Jump/Ability
Mouse Wheel = Spin

WASD = Forward, Backward and Strafe Keys
Q = Shoot (Normal Ring Throw)
E = Spindash
R = Lightdash (if availiable)

Basically puts aiming, shooting and ability using on your right hand (mouse), movement and miscellaneous controls on your left hand (keys).

As far as using mouselook, I'll go look up how to do it again (I forgot), and get that info to you.

*EDIT* Under Options -> Mouse Options. The first three options should be set to yes. If I'm not mistaken, thats all you should have to do. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I set these controls 2 years ago, and never touched them again. O.o

I really need to make a guide on how to properly adjust controls anyways, so, here's an indepth guide. I'll probably post this somewhere else public, but otherwise, some of this crap you may already know, I dunno. :\

Basically, you want something comfortable and efficient. Mouselook and Strafing are two powerful kinds of controls that can come in handy in any gametype you play, but some retard didn't set the default mousespeed or controls to be comfortable OR efficient to use it, so, new users are stuck with crap.

So ya, liek, first, mouselook. Go to Options > Mouse Options. Enable all three first settings, and then take a look at the mouse speeds. Mousespeed is x speed, while Mouselook is y speed, so they're pretty easy to adjust to your liking. You'll want to set these speeds relatively high, but not max; if they're too slow, you won't be able to turn fast enough (and you'll have to keep raising the mouse to stay on the mouse pad), but if you go too fast, you won't be able to control yourself at all.

Play with that a bit. Got it to your liking? Cool.

Now, the keys. You've probably heard of the WASD control scheme; if not, here's a simple explanation. W and S are forward and backwards, while A and D are for strafing. You'll be able to set these up easily in Options > Setup Controls > Player 1 Controls. Also, while you're there, I'd recommend changing Ring Toss, Spin Jump, and Spin Dash controls to Mouse1, Mouse2, and Mouse3 buttons, respectively. If you don't have a third mouse button, then I guess you'll have to improvise.

Move around a bit now. Shoot, jump, spin, strafe, all that good stuff. If you got yourself comfortable, then you're basically set. Now, if you want to go even further, then I've got plenty of control setting ideas.

'Kay. Let's assume what you're going to do ingame. Turn off mouselook? Check. Toss the flag or lightdash? Check. Take snaps, end the game, and exitlevel? Possibly. Let's get to the definite uses first.

Assuming you use the mouse with your right hand and WASD with your left hand, you've got a lot of space and versatility. Now, if you can add some more keys by your WASD setting, it should still stay comfortable, depending on where those keys are placed. Personally, I have Mouselook (mouselook off, in this case - we still have automlook on, so the effects are reversed) as the Left Shift key, so it's easy to just keep it help down; as for light dash, E. Not a letter you'd reach for often in this setup, but it's close enough to press when you need it.

As for keys like Screenshot and Endgame, you'd best put them in a place where you can't reach unless you took your hand off the WASD/mouse. Ins and End are ideal, for instance.

If you want to get really kooky, add some scripts! I have a freakin' library in my autoexec.cfg, the most highly used commands being character switches (1 - Sonic, 2 - Tails, 3 - Knuckles, etc.), ring toggle (space switches between normal ring and special ring for the Mouse1 button), and camchase toggle with J. I ought to release a modified version of a script, in case anyone wanted to use some ideas.

But anyways, that's about it. I hope it came in handy. Just play around with your controls a bit if that doesn't satisfy you.

It's imposable to play SRB2 well without Mouselook. It enables strafing and looking up and down, both of which come in handy. I didn't think mouselook was useful until I tried it. In addition, you can control how drastically you turn. If you can't turn fast, you can't take tight corners. If you can't turn accurately, you can't snipe.

My controls are:

R is Forwards.
F is backpedal.
D&G are strafe.
Space is lightdash.
E is scores.
T is whatever I bind keys to.
Left Click is my Jump.
Right Click is spin.
Scroll Down/Forward is shooting.

I really don't know why you'd use the default ring, unless you're using overdrive or something.

Sometimes I have my bad days with using rail. I'll keep collecting them so that others won't get ahold of them, though.

I find my controls comfortably nice and easy.
Movement: Arrow keys
Jump: Right Mouse/space
Shoot: Left Mouse
Spindash: V
Lightdash: B
Cam right:/
Cam left: .
Scores: Tab

Anybody that tells you to use the keyboard to turn, do not listen to them. It's how SRB2's controls are defaulted (for some reason), but it's the worst possible way to play. You don't play other first person shooters by turning with the keyboard, do you?

Yeah, if you want to be good in match and stuff, you'd need to use the mouse to change your direction. Well, at least that's how I do it. Oh yeah, follow Blue Warrior's advice. It's good stuff.

How the hell do you do that?
Code:
alias nm "setcontrol firenormal mouse1; bind space sp"
alias sp "setcontrol fire mouse1; bind space nm"
sp

This is how I play it/My configuration.

movement : arrow keys
jump button is /
spindash is .
shooting is ctrl
starfe left n
starfe right m (I'm getting better at starfing)
shooting normal I dunno that one
lightdash is '
cam left is o
cam left is p

Oh really?

I beg to differ. ^_^()

Okay, I'm going to start trying out these different controls by making them into different CFG files, although I'm trying Blue Warrior's first because it was the most thorough explanation of how to use mouselook, etcetera.

I'll get back to you on the results (also, my mouse has 6 buttons).

As per my scheme:

Jump - Right Click
Shoot - Left Click
Shoot (Normal Ring) - E
Move - WASD
Mouselook Toggle - Middle Click
Spindash - Shift
Toss - ' (I used to have it as mouse *wheel*, but then it often accidently activated, so...)

Other slight variations include having Jump as Shift and Spindash as Control or having Toss as Q.

My aim is naturally a piece of carp on a tiny pike, so Mouselook Toggle is really useful for me. Normally, I can only turn left-right with my mouse. When I hold the button down, I can aim up-down when I need to. When I let go, it instantly snaps back into a neutral position, which is prime for people on the ground. A possible variation is using one of those scripts for having to toggle on or off per button press instead of holding it down, but I haven't attempted it yet...

I rarely do good at Match. What I feel is that my "playstyle" is more of a supportive role than a beserk-thok-and-hit-everyone role, so I feel I do better in CTF.

My controls:

Arrow keys: Move.
S: Jump
A and D: Strafe left and right
Space: Shoot
W: Shoot Normal
Shift: Spindash
Right mouse: Forward
Left mouse: Shoot
Middle mouse: Jump

I always switch back and forth between mouse and keyboard.

Okay, I tried using Blue Warrior's advice, and went into a netgame.

I'm not sure about my MLook and MSpeed, but anyway, I suck MORE than I used to. I have no idea when/how (as in, how to use it in a situation) to use the strafe keys, and steering is awful, just plain awful. I tried using first person (chasecam off, which I already have set to my own bind key), and it's too confusing for me to aim, especially when tossing a ring such as automatic...

Any OTHER tips? I don't feel like trying out 20 different schemes.

Well, first off, it takes a while to get used to a mouse. Second, use strafe while rushing towards an opponent, and when they're in your line of fire, shoot. Also, hold strafe while turning, and jump a little to start going around in circles while moving up and down, which is great for doging attacks while you have no rings, then when you're ready, thok to get to the nearest rings.

I have a good strategy and I'm really good at it. During ctf or match I put my mouse on the left side of the computer, the I use my left hand to look, fire, jump, and strafe. For my right hand I just use it to move with the arrows. Here are my controls.

Move up: arrow up
Move left: arrow left
Move right: arrow right
Move backward: arrow down
Strafe: mouse scroll
Fire both normal and special rings: left click
Jump: right click

Controls for coop.

/: jump
.: spindash
