How to multiplayer with a friend??

I have been struggling to figure out multiplayer for far too long and need it explained to me like one would a toddler because i'm genuinely lost on what to do. I've seen talk about VPNs and a lot of things that i frankly do not understand.. all i want to do is play the main singleplayer mode story but with a friend, online. Thats it. For them to join me on their computer and for us to see each other ingame. I did the hosting an internet/lan server thing but it doesnt show an address or anything. Not in a way i understand at least. I'd also like to play with a few mods.. only a couple character mods that we can both access. I would really appreciate if someone could explain? is this possible

Whoops, just noticed this is for SRB2 base game lol. I know SRB2Kart allows you to invite through Discord, maybe the base game also lets you do that by pressing the "+" button on Discord?

heres a pretty good video to show you :)

That’s for setting up a local server. Not an online one.

What do you mean by this? You don't know how to port forward? Your router isn't capable of doing so? You don't have access to the router to set it up yourself? What does this mean?
I'm assuming he's referring to the lack of steps on port forwarding in the video that was just shared.
To elaborate on what I just said, that video is for setting up a LAN/local server. Port forwarding is required for an online server.

Here's the only port forwarding guide I know.

It's hard to give instructions on how to port forward since each router has a different method of doing so, and there are so many routers out there.

He's not the one asking for help setting up a server. @birdcat is.
Sorry, I got the two mixed up since the have the same profile picture.
birdcat talked about how he doesn't understand VPNs.
So? They're not gonna make any progress if they don't take the time to learn how to do it.
Making progress is about committing to the goal, and not saying "i dont get it" and calling for help immediately.

I never said VPNs weren't viable because he was inept or something.

It seems like he tried them, and couldn't figure it out on his own.
My point was that telling him to use VPNs but not how isn't helpful because of what I just said.
