edit: i managed to come up with something, but thank you to everyone that answered anyway.

what it says on the tin, i want to make an srb2 character but can't decide on an animal, i've already eliminated options for what i'm not making, which i'll list below, but i'm open to suggestions.

animals i'm not making:

hedgehogs and foxes - kinda overused, not only in srb2, but the fandom in general as well.

echidnas - i'm not sure if can make sense of an echidna oc, considering knuckles is the last one or something.

wolves - also kinda overused in srb2, but feels too edgy for me on top of that i guess?

reptiles, sea creatures, and insects - those go a bit too much off the basic model, and i'm not skilled enough to make those considering i'm not even an artist.

armadillos - as cool as that animal is, i'm very confused about how their shells work with clothes and such, and i'd probably end up copying too much of the moveset from mighty's moveset.

that's about it, i don't expect anyone to answer, but i'd really appriciate suggestions anyway.

Hmm..How about cetacean? Insects could work too! There aren't many insect Sonic OCs or official Sonic characters. Only one I could remember is Charmy the Bee.

----Edit like 1 minute later----

Porcupine? It's a great alternative if you want an STH OC with spikes while NOT being a hedgehog. I had an OC that was a porcupine.

i mean, jewel the beetle exists in the idw comic, so that's another insect for you. but anyway, i know i sound kinda picky but i'm not a good artist, so drawing spikes would be hard for me, and i've decided to make the sprites myself anyway. as for a cetacean - that character would have to be huge, which means more sprite work for me. though, now i'm reconsidering insects, despite stating above that it'd be hard for me to make one, and me finding the majority of bugs icky (with the exception of ants, bees, beetles, and butterflies), thanks anyway

chipalpaka (wtf with your name) i reccomend select a animal that you like or select something with a rulet, but if i say one i would like see a red panda

Seems to me the go to method most creatives do in general when trying to come up with something new and original for a character is to find some little known obscure creature from Australia and use that as their inspiration. Usually it ends up being marsupials but anything obscure could work just as well. It also doesn't have to be from Australia but you do get quite a bit of wiggle room for originality from there.

My recommendation would be to think up a set of powers you want your character to have to begin with and then choose something that closely fits with that power set.

Vaquita is a cetacean and they are pretty small.

i actually have a spin ability and and character gimick in mind already, but they could work with pretty much any animal, so that doesn't help me a lot, and i also don't want it my character to be too obscure, but still unique.

This lil' fella.

You could design your character having inspiration from "Veph the Dolphin-Fox" as it is a cetacean. Just not with the mammal/fox part.

they are quite small, but i already decided on a base animal, and i might decide to make it a hybrid at some point, thanks

I think its you just make a pretty design.
A sheep is pretty simple, isn't?
And the IDW artists made Lanolin that have a very interesting and with few details that makes it cool.

"Very interesting and with few details"

You can probably choose some extinct animals right? First one that comes to mind for me atleast is Megalodon. But sharks are more common than ever as Sonic OCs. so it's probably not a good choice. Not to mention most shark OCs look pretty bad.

interesting. speaking of idw, i think i'm gonna go with ian flynn's take that all of the sonic anthros are just different races of the same species, which explains why they all have different characteristics while also having similar base bodies for the most part.

Reminds me Razor the Shark from Archie.
