I just stumbled on both of these links earlier today. Pretty cool to see SRB2 on a list of some of the top DooM mods.

Sonic's sprites are based off X-Treme's, so it's not entirely guessing.

Maybe when more of these projects get finished, the fans could actually put Sega to shame and provide some competition if the fan works generate more hype than the official work.
