About the female characters in the Sonic series

It's funny: the female damsel in distress ("damsel" is a unisex term) was cliché when Amy was first created. Save the princess... again. But nowadays it's so maligned that it's become subversive and rebellious to have the main girl get captured and need rescuing. It becomes fresh and original (outside of Peach, because sticking to one's guns is cool like that) to have the princess be martially incapable. Strong Female Character has become the new cliché by a mile - even Galadriel has to be "generic sword lady" now. Why not a similar character to Eowen? That wouldn't wreck the source material. Can't have that.

I'm of the Lara Croft generation - you know, the only gaming icon other than Sonic to hit full mainstream appeal? It's no coincidence that one of only two gaming icons has since been decried for not being ugly or something. Because if you write a female character that people like, you're clearly doing it wrong. People aren't supposed to like the Strong Character: Female, they're meant to be demoralised by the Strong Female Character.
