Questions Regarding Sonic Team Junior's History

The forum database only goes back to 2003. There was a server failure in late 2003 and my backups were corrupt, so the forums were reset from scratch. The current version at the time was already Final Demo 1.04.

I admit I wasn't integrated well into the community at the time of Demo 1 and 2, but I don't remember any WADs being made for it. SRB2 modding didn't really take off until Demo 4.

Do any of you developers know why there are Japanese symbols everywhere? It's a bit strange, since this game is being developed in the west.

Although my furry friend Fyrus put it in a...way, yes, it is generally because many of us are fascinated and enjoy Japanese culture and what it has to offer.

The game is being developed in the west but it's important to note that Sonic along with many other video games of our childhood were mainly developed in Japan and so that has also influenced much of us.

EDIT: I don't mean to answer this in stead of the devs, but this is just my educated guess.

Everywhere? The only japanese symbol I've seen so far inside SRB2 was the old Score Emblem. I've read that there may be something of the sort in Frost Columns Zone, but I don't know for sure.

were there any mods made for srb2 back in the demo 1\2 days?

Of course. People could make levels and stuff then, too.

You're probably looking for a more detailed answer, though..

*) I have a diving wad from Sept. 2001
*) Beach.wad from July 2001 (is this an old map of Mystic's?)
*) Blaze.wad from March 2001, character skin
*) CHAO.WAD, a character skin made by Rlan, June 2001
*) CINO.WAD, a character recolor of Sonic Retro member Cinossu that he made in 2001. :)
*) Quite possibly the first version of Mystic's Jade Coast Zone, July 2001

This is obviously an incomplete list and just for example. These are ones that I've hung on to. Maybe I have more, who knows, I don't have my old stuff organized well.

I'm not a fan of the easternization of the game. Sonikku hid some japanese in a level or two, but I tolerated it because a) it was hidden and b) hey, it's Sonikku.

English is kind of a 'lowest common denominator' language.. it's bad enough for a foreigner to have to know English to play, it's very unfair to also expect any knowledge of Japanese.

I still think it's hilarious that Sonikku didn't even do it right. ソニツク != ソニック =P

In all seriousness, there's nothing that isn't significantly hidden or completely unused, last I checked. If there's something I'm forgetting that should be purged, please alert me, as there's a difference between us being silly and goofing off and something the player would actually notice.

something the player would actually notice

Does this count? It's in the same room as an emerald token, and anyone doing a thorough search of the map for secrets would probably find it.

The player would have to find the room first, and I have to say I didn't know about it until I saw it in a video.

...What is that room, and what map is it in? I'd say Aerial Garden Zone, but the sky texture is wrong.

Edit: Ah, Red Volcano Zone. Tricky.

Well, Red Volcano Zone is the only place that has mostly any lava and that stone texture, so it might be from there... but then the sky doesn't make any sense. RVZ is nowhere near a blue cloudy sky...

Eh, I guess they didn't change the sky at all.

EDIT: Unknownlight beat me to it... I guess.

The room isn't well-known at this point because it was secretly snuck in with a 2.1 bugfix patch and was not present in the initial release.

A kanji-free secret room in CEZ2 was also snuck in, hidden behind a bookcase that previously got Sonic trapped forever if he landed behind it.

Yeah, and I already told him to remove that character in the next patch, because it's so incredibly blatant.

Wait, what the fuck?

Code:
Mapnum	MAP16
Mapname	RED VOLCANO ZONE 1
Location	X:2984 Y:-12817 Z:1547 A:120

When the fuck was this added? It's not even in zones.dta, just patch.dta! Is stuff like this kosher now?

I guess secrets must be kept secrets... to them, I guess. They put stuff in places you'd probably never expect to find them.

I thought that little kanji was a stick person at first. Just shows how little I know about Japan stuff.

I guess this means I shouldn't overwrite the patches I have now as they could hold secrets. Even though they were meant to be bug fixes

Yeah, and I already told him to remove that character in the next patch, because it's so incredibly blatant.

Not only that, the secret area, while having an ingenious access point, it is pretty out of place itself. Why not put the room in a 'Blue Mountain' motif (since it's supposed to be an easter egg anyway?) Or something else that gives a nod to something easter-eggy.

Why did an image of Eggman in a rabbit suit just jump into my mind...

I think that area has been cleaned up in the next patch. This is what happens when people stealth push stuff without telling anyone, regardless. Those responsible have been glared at already.

;~;

It's an incomplete alternative path. I went through and actually completed it for 2.1.7, which includes changing the sky away from old GFZ sky and dealing with the kanji (;~;)
