my initial thought was that like: "hmm, a very hyped mod released so a bunch of people entered the message board at the same time, i wonder what that mod can be" but to my surprise, it wasn't, so i want to ask y'all what you guys think happened

If that's genuinely what caused the outage to happen, then the only things I could say is:
1. That's seriously the most petty shit anybody could've ever done.
2. It seemed very unnecessary to do when there were literally other options like discussing what was wrong with the mod, or even uploading it somewhere else (such as the Gamebanana).

DDoS attacks unfortunately are far easier to do than they should be, which is why they have become a common cause of temporary outages (it is literally the "Hello World" of cyberattacks).

I know Cloudflare has tools provided to help with mitigation, but I am not sure just what this forum uses for defense.

Apparently it was actually because the webmaster trying to add in an extra anti-AI scraping measure to the site but it didn't go out as planned, as said in the SRB2 Discord server

Recently there's been a lot of slowdown on the MB and Wiki due to AI scraper bots that flood the network and try to steal everything. We've been looking into prospective solutions to that. The webmaster tried to implement one and it went a bit awry, resulting in the outage. That's all that happened.
