Why 2.2?

Hello everyone.
I'm sorry for such a silly question, but why is the new upcoming release gonna be labeled 2.2 if it has sorta 85% reworked?
Shouldn't it be 3.0 then? It didn't really matter to me that much until now. I'm just curious.

You ask why 2.2. But I ask who 2.2. I ask how 2.2. Most importantly, I ask when 2.2.

We switched from 1.X to 2.X because our old version numbering scheme (1.09.4 and its ilk) got increasingly nonsensical and impossible to maintain. So the switch to 2.X was basically a "reboot" of the version numbering scheme. It's basically "2.[major version].[minor version]", and the 2. is just there for historical reasons.

So it's kinda like Minecraft, then. *Scratches head*
