It's stated on the coin trophy in SSBM that it's unknown where coins come from. This is Nintendo's way of telling us it's one of those things meant to be debated.

Anyways, hiding your money in architecture is actually a pretty good idea. I'll hafta try it sometime.

It's a game. Why make a possiblilty of why it might be there. It's just in the design. It doesn't have to have a particular reason.

Actually, in Super Paper Mario, it has been stated by one of the ninjas in the hundred ninja trial that he walks around and drops coins everywhere. He's probably lying, though.

The game designer put it there. Mentioning it in the trophy text is Nintendo noting that it's ridiculous, not expecting a debate.
