What's all this about emeralds and such?

I keep hearing about secrets, mainly emeralds. What are these secrets for, I think the emeralds turn you into your super form, right? Where can I find the secrets?

Err, what do the initials like, "GFZ1" stand for? It's the act, right?

Edit: Yes, it's the aact's initils. And what is the exact command I have to type in to get my game saved to slot 1? I must not be typing the, "save" command in correctly.

Or you could hit escape, hit enter on "1 Player", go down to "Save Game", hit enter, highlight your slot, hit enter, name your save, hit enter, et voila, you have saved.
