What if SRB2 was being made instead of sonic xtreme around mario 64's release date?

I'm curious to know what would happen if SRB2 was released on the Sega Saturn.
It would be nothing like the game we have today. Different people were developing it at the time and they had a different vision of the game than the people currently in charge

On top of that, the game as we know it today is the result of the combined efforts of so many people slowly working on it as a hobby over the course of decades. If the game had been developed professionally by a dedicated team back then to run on the Saturn within a deadline, it would undoubtedly have taken a radically different design direction.

Official mods of DOOM's engine aren't that unusual: stuff like Hexen and Chex Quest come to mind.
That being said, it would be rather interesting to imagine the hypothetical of Sega utilizing the DOOM engine for a Sonic game.
I can't even begin to imagine the cultural barrier between ID and Sega if that were to happen!

Reframing the question like this does lead to additional curiosities. Rather than specifically SRB2, the hypothetical of SEGA simply just deciding to use the DOOM engine to make a "3D" Sonic game for the Saturn makes one wonder things such as whether the game would be first person or third person, whether it would feature FPS mechanics, how many characters would be playable and which ones specifically, etc.

Maybe it'll be something like "Sonic VR" or similar lol
