what console is srb2 supposed to replicate?

most people would say saturn, but with the recent 32x demo release i have really been wondering

Feels like Windows 98 to me
I mean, it was developed for Windows 98 (or DOS), initially. Original poster said "console".

I always figured Saturn, due to the quads, the mixing of 2D and 3D, the large levels, and having lots of sprites on screen at once. I still think so, but it seems to work surprisingly well on the 32X.

The Saturn and the 32X are both fairly obscure nowadays. Emulating them can be a challenge.
However, I feel like the 32X has the advantage in that it's already running on top of one of the most popular 16-bit consoles of all time. If the Saturn were less obscure, it would be better documented and emulated, and we might be seeing a port of SRB2 to it.
I don't really know much about the technical side of ANY of this, though, so maybe I shouldn't speculate on what would be easier.
The 32X port is a marvel of engineering, although it seems to have had to make a few sacrifices, naturally.

we might be getting a saturn srb2, even with its current status, there are saturn homebrews out there

if we do get one and its a mod of saturn doom however, i can expect a disaster

To answer the topic title, I'd say it's probably not trying to replicate any particular system or even era, it just looks the way it does because it runs on a modified version of the DOOM engine. From a gameplay perspective however, it's definitely a 3D interpretation of the classic Genesis/Mega Drive Sonic games.

Yeah im really sure its the sega saturn. I think motoroach even says so in his sprite tutorial. The sprite style of srb2 is supposed to kinda replicate the Sonic Xtreme style, and the official srb2 models (jeck jim's) are saturn styled. So it really would make sense for the game to be based off the saturn.

I know it is trying to replicate the Saturn because the official 3d models were trying to replicate it.

they made it for the 32x because the saturn is wayy harder to program on

Capcom does have some good pixel art in their older fighting games but personally I'm a bigger fan of Arc System Works in that regard. BlazBlue and Under Night are incredible.
They're good too, yea!
Phonon and Jubei from Chrono Trigger and In-Birth are some of my favorites.
