What are the alternatives to hosting via port forwarding?

Recently, i've been trying to host a multiplayer section on SRB2 to play with my friends, this failed due to me not being able to find my router's password, and being scared of reseting it and having to set it up all over again, my cousin [which works at the internet provider i have] told me it was a bad idea to do port forwarding and i would get hacked and etc.
So, since i'm running out of options related to that, can someone tell me the alternatives of port forwarding for multiplayer?

Use a VPN or rent a server.
The first mean everyone must share the same VPN and cause connection issues and the other have a cost.

Also he's right and wrong for dangers.
It depends on the port and the router: Some only do the port forwarding when the concerned device is accessible and Doom Legacy is way less popular than HTTP or stuff like that so getting hacked on this ports is unlikely but that don't mean it's safe.
