I have reason to believe that unintended behavior is present when there's a custom gamemode that has both GTR_LIVES, and GTR_SPECTATORS gametype rules.
If you get a "Game Over", you can become a spectator, and then re-enter the game with all your lives.
No screenshots, but I've included a WAD that demonstrates this with existing Match Maps.
