Eternity in an hour
This topic is about which game series you consider the most special to you for whatever reason. This isn't necessarily about which games are better games than each other, it's about what they mean to you; why they resonate with you personally.
Here's my list:
1. Mega Man Zero/ZX
I remember when I started playing the Zero games back around 2004 or 2005. I remember I got them in reverse order. Zero 4, then 3, then 2, and finally 1. These games were the second coolest thing ever to me back then, second only to Sonic. When ZX came out, I ended up getting that too, though at first I found it too confusing and gave up trying to find my way around, concluding that the Zero games were superior. I nonetheless gave ZXA a try when it came out, and ended up adoring it. This inspired me to go back and give ZX another try. I dusted off the game and committed myself to beating it, even if I had to resort to google for help on occasion. Ultimately, I fell in love all over again, and all 6 of these games are my most treasured possessions to this day.
2. Sonic the Hedgehog
Back when I was a kid, Sonic was easily my number 1 favorite thing. I used to watch AoSTH before going to school as a kid, and eventually found out about the games from some friends of mine, as well as my sister. What eventually ended up knocking it down to number 2 for me was a drop in the quality of animations and writing around and after the time of Sonic Colors. Gone are the days of gorgeous pre-rendered cutscenes and characters other than Sonic, Tails, and Eggman being written as anything more than a slab of cardboard assigned a role. Nonetheless, the connection to the series I already established after ages of Sonic being my favorite is enough to keep it solidly at my number 2 slot.
3. Borderlands
My Borderlands journey began around the time I graduated high school, when I purchased a copy of Borderlands 2. I have since completed my collection on Steam. While I do adore the gameplay in this series, the story and characters is what really makes this series special. There's a special human element to the characters in this series, from their struggles to their ambitions and the way they think, to just how they choose to live their lives. The gay/lesbian representation is on point, with them being people first and foremost, and their preferences in lifestyle never really getting shoved down your throat or portrayed in a hateful manner. Athena and Sir Hammerlock are two fantastic examples of this. Additionally, Handsome Jack is probably one of the most interesting and compelling villains in any game series.
4. Crash and Spyro
Before I became a solid fan of the Sonic series, there was these two franchises for me. I've always considered them to be sister franchises, so I bundle them together. I've always found it hard to pick a favorite between the two of them. All the way back when I got a PS1 for Christmas as a kid, Crash 2 was the game I got with it, and I eventually went on to collect all the Crash and Spyro games on PS1, minus Crash 1. It wouldn't be until the remakes that I would finally play through Crash 1 properly.
5. Team Fortress 2
While I haven't been active since around 2015, this game is probably the one I used to play online with my friends the most. The three classes I ended up playing most were Sniper, Scout, and Pyro, in that order. I also would occasionally play medic if need be. I always really wanted to get good with Spy, but try as I might I was never able to. By the time I stopped being active, I had accumulated over 1200 hours in game, and I have no regrets.
