Time Level

I am trying to make a time level for two map pack I am working on, in which the player has a countdown timer to finish the level. I have searched the wiki but couldn't find anything helpful.

The closest I got to making a timed level was making the level a Special Stage where I set the parameters to need 0 rings collected and x amount of time (as a test, I used 180). And for the time being, it did well, but since its a special stage then the emerald screen would show up at the end, also saying that the time went out meaning you didn't collect the emerald. I only made the stage into a 'special stage' to get the timer, but since the ending is not quite right, it can't be done this way.

So I ask, is there someway to make the level time based? (Once again, this is not a special stage, I only made it a special stage to see if the timer worked well, which it did but the ending screen ruins it along with the words "Time out").
 
Use a Countdown = x in seconds variable in a Level header.

Ex. Countdown = 600, level ends in 10 minutes
