Super Mario Galaxy

Mario Sunshine was disliked because of how stupid all the exploration things were. Blue coins were incredibly dumb, and the level design, while good in places, had no variation whatsoever.

Also, Galaxy DOES have exploration. There are secret stars, and hidden 1-ups everywhere. It's just not in the same method as Super Mario 64's "figure it out to continue playing" vein, and the level design is more focused and linear than it was in SM64.

There are still plenty of opportunities to explore and look around.

As Mystic said, there are actually quite a lot to discover in the levels. The balance between platforming and exploring in this game is more similar to the balance in the classic games. Each level has one or two secerts areas for you to find.

BTW, Sunshine is underrated, but it has the infamous blue coin challenges.

The factor on how much you like Galaxy depends on which Mario games you where raised on. If you were raised on the classic games, you will enjoy it more. If you were raised on games like 64 and Sunshine, you might find the more traditional linear levels a strange departure from what you are used to.

Either way, you've got to admit the music is fantastic.

The concept of running around on several tiny little "planets" really doesn't excite me. I mean, sure, it opens the way for lotsa gimmicks for hopping from planet to planet, but I'd rather play on one XBox huge planet.

Although I don't actually own the game, so I'm probably wrong on that. :P

I need help with the flaming Dino Piranah. Is there any way for him not to hit you? He's way too fast.

That's basically what I'm doing, except he's too fast; he always catches up to me after about 7 seconds of running.

Delete+repost: 'K, I was able to beat him: when he's about to get me, I go around him and end up behind him!

Anyways, now I'm at the center of the universe, (With 81 stars and 38 lives, squee!) and I just got to Bowser, and I have no idea when to hit him: All he does is roll around in his weird stone thingy, then make some shockwaves, then roll around again. Helpz0rs plz. [/n00b]

Remember those stones with the red hole? Well, you use the same stratagy with bowser, hit the only not rocky part. So basicly, spin when you are in front of the rock and boswer's head is in range.

Well, I don't remember the stones, but I get what you're saying.

EDIT: Oh, now, I get what you're talking about. I didn't know those could be killed. <.<

Anyways, once I knew how to beat him, it was easy. Now to go get the other 38 stars I need.

I easily did the Luigi one. How? I RTFM. It has a list of special moves, including one that lets you jump really far.

Anyways, I haven't gotten the purple comet to appear at Bouldergeist. What do you do there?

By the way, who else thinks Mario's voice sounds gay when he says "Thank you for playing my game" at the end of the credits?

Luigi has a much better voice than Mario, but it is still annoying. Did anyone get one of those pre-order phone calls where Mario talked for about 2 minutes straight? Makes me wonder why people complain about this game not having voice acting, because honestly, it would only hurt it just like it did to Sunshine.

Anyways, I finally beat this with 242 stars. Fun, really really fun.

I really hate Luigi's "Long Jump" grunting. I wanted to rip my ears out I hated it so much. I would rather just hear "Yahoo!" instead of Luigi's weird grunt. Other than that and the end part, I did like Luigi's voice a lot better than Mario's.

Anyways, I'm just glad this doesn't support online Multiplayer. Then everyone would be RPing at the observatory. What with all the houses and the red stars(don't ask if you don't know), etc.

Ehh, I liked Mario's first voice in Mario Galaxy. That sounded much, much better than the current one.

Good old Charles Martinet... Don't have the game, but your description of the Mario voice reminds me of Mario versus Donkey Kong...
Mario sounded like he said:
Thank-a ya very much for (to-a?) playing-a mah game(seh?)!
VERY odd... and then the Mini-Marios bouncing around on the end screen were slightly goofy.

Okay, go ahead and get back on topic. I'm done ranting.

Alrighty, in the interests of competition and curiosity of where I can improve these, I'm going to post my high scores. A few of them aren't that good, but most of them are at least decent. I'm pretty sure a few of these are not improvable. All were achieved with Mario except one.

Good Egg - 68
Honeyhive - 34
Space Junk - 47
Battlerock - 39
Beach Bowl - 34
Ghostly - 28
Gusty Garden - 38
Freezeflame - 108 (Not even close to perfect, stupid limited time coins.)
Dusty Dune - 56
Gold Leaf - 77
Sea Slide - 13 (I seriously can't find any more)
Toy Time - 29
Deep Dark - 100 (rather proud of this)
Dreadnought - 34
Melty Molten - 35

Gateway - 46
Bowser Jr.'s Robot Reactor - 8
Bowser's Star Reactor - 33
Bowser Jr.'s Airship Armada - 5 (This score sucks)
Bowser's Dark Matter Plant - 51
Bowser Jr.'s Lava Reactor - 14
Bowser's Galaxy Reactor - 47

Loopdeeloop - 50
Flipswitch - 2 (I'm pretty sure there ARE only 2)
Rolling Green - 76
Hurry-Scurry - 11
Bubble Breeze - 145
Sweet Sweet - 10
Sling Pod - 10 (I'm pretty sure getting the coins from the cannons isn't possible here, but some people are truly insane)
Buoy Base - 35
Drip Drop - 12
Boo's Boneyard - 54 (I definitely missed quite a few here)
Honeyclimb - 35
Snow Cap - 9
Bonefin - 3
Sand Spiral - 4
Matter Splatter - 7 (Haven't tried getting more yet, so this score sucks)
Bigmouth - 27 (Killing all those boos individually was hard)
Rolling Gizmo - 123
Loopdeeswoop - 11
Bubble Blast - 105 (Luigi happened to be used for this one)
Grand Finale - 10

So, post your scores, as I'm SURE I've missed some coins, and I'd like a challenge.

Wait, you actually tried getting high scores on every level? Wow, never knew somebody would actually care about them.

Well, so far I've only tried getting a high score on Deep Dark Galaxy, getting 104 coins, and that was to check if you could get a star when you collected 100 coins. Let me remind you that I did do all kinds of unintended tricks like the unnamed uber-single-wall-spin-jump to get coins that I wasn't supposed to get yet in that mission, so yeah, sue me.
