You could google for a Java IRC, which won't install mIRC, but run from a website instead.

Ok, this is a thing that doesn't put me confortablle. One sends a private message telling the other where to find the wad, but doesn't share that location with the others.

Actually they did tell you the location. The WAD isn't publicly released because it's an unstable beta. Only making it available over IRC keeps n00bs from getting to it and asking n00by questions about it.
