As there's a wii version, and the 3DS is stronger.Does anyone think it's possible to Port SRB2 to the 3DS? Discuss.

Yes, let's start writing a port right now before we EVEN GET THE 3DS. Great idea.

It could be possible, but with the 3DS auto-updating all the time, I doubt homebrew will be easy...

I doubt it would be worth it, even if it's possible. I mean, wouldn't the depth effect that makes the 3DS truly amazing lie in the code of its games? SRB2 probably couldn't take advantage of that without major reconfiguring.

Well, since the 3D effects can be turned off at will, is it even necessary to include 3D effects? The 3DS has backwards capabilities to the regular DS, so I don't see why the 3D effects will be a problem.
Homebrew, as DOOD said, most likely will be, but it was possible with the Wii.

Nintendo aren't very good at securing their consoles as it is (or making decent operating systems at all), and since the 3DS has an SD slot it'll be even easier to pull off homebrew hacks without some weird flash cart.

We don't know the RAM for it as of yet, so you'll have to wait and see I guess, though it has a GPU so that's a start, unlike the DS Lite. =P

You do know that the 3D effect is nothing more than drawing two different viewpoints, from two different cameras at the same time, right? This could be very easily done, although it would require more horsepower than SRB2 currently does.

The screen is only 400x240 though, so you would only be able to play it at 320x200.

I highly doubt the 3DS is more powerful than the Wii.

And if it isn't, it won't run any faster, especially as OpenGL mode still won't be able to run (Nintendo uses a proprietary graphics API similar to OpenGL called GX, for which support will have to be coded into SRB2 for).

In early-June 2010, video gaming website IGN reported that according to "several developers who have experienced 3DS in its current form", the system possesses processing power that "far exceed the Nintendo Wii".

It is more powerful than the Wii, Callum.
I found this in the 3DS wiki article.

Haven't replied to anything in a while... I guess I'll start with this.

So you go out of the way to explain that the 3DS is stronger, Sky? Well.. I guess his logic works. From looking up the 3DS, Wikipedia states the following specs.

Code:
[B]Media[/B] Nintendo 3DS Game Card /DS Game Cards
[B]Storage capacity[/B] [URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saved_game"]Cartridge save[/URL], [URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card"]SD card[/URL], Internal [URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_Memory"]Flash Memory[/URL][U]

[B]Online services[/B] [URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Wi-Fi_Connection"]Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection[/URL]

As well as a whole table on the DSi and 3DS. Plus, might I elaborate on your "screen size" thing, Chaotikal? This copy from the table states the 3DS screen info (This text is awkward. Damn linux. Damn 4th chaos emerald)

Code:
[B]Screen Size[/B] 3.53 inches (90 mm)(top) and 3.02 inches (77 mm)(bottom)
  [B]Screen Resolution[/B] Top Screen resolution 800x240 (effectively 400x240 per eye, [URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wide_QVGA"]WQVGA[/URL]); touch screen is 320x240 [URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarter_VGA"]QVGA[/URL]

So what does this tell you? Well it tells me one of your resmarks were off. 400 per eye. Of course, I doubt consider any sense if it were possible to go THAT low. So while modifying the screen sizes for a simple homebrew would be lunacy, I see many developers who plan to make homebrew will be extremely limited in size, and possibly in specs. Besides, the 3DS only has better specs than the Wii because it has 3D. Remember THESE specs from the Wii.

Notice there's more info on the Wii. Until we get a full look on the 3DS, the simple specs we got there are all we have to work with if we (stupidly) attempt SRB23DS. Besides, you don't seem to have put logic on making SRB2 for the DSi first. Pointless though, as the DSi specs look like just GFZ1 will be limited to 15fps. So take all this info as such: We made a topic on homebrew for a system that we can't even consider will be ABLE to have homebrew. We would have limited info to build upon. We never considered the idea for a system that's already out. And at the moment, we should stick to what we have, i.e. SRB2Wii.

Indeed we don't know the final specs for the 3DS, though I think it's safe to say that since it basically has to render stuff twice it's got quite a bit of horsepower under its belt, especially since it's rendering it at GC/Wii quality graphics (not that it's much of an achievement, but still).

Also, this guy has a rather deceiving name, 'DarkSagaFromSegaLMA0' seems like a name one of the lesser intelligent folk would carry around, but he seems reasonably intelligent from a single post... [/ot]

What part of 'RETIRED' don't you understand?
I'm skeptical, because company demos always make something look a whole lot better than it is. Like that samurai thing, they only reason they can run it because there's nothing else in the scene except for the samurai, surrounded by a couple polygons to cover the floor and wall.

Oh, plus that company demo isn't using 3D right? So there also might be extra power to make it look so good.

But then again, look at Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid 3. Amazing graphics and they are all real-time.

In your srb2, going 'nou'
I am betting this won't happen. Seeing how this is the third - forth (If you count the DS lite as different from the DS original) Ds and the others really haven't improved alot, it won't be able to run as smooth as we map hope. Yeah it may load, I won't doubt you there but the idea of it running on a Ds has left my mind for ever.

I WAS going to mention this, but then I figured that I would get flamed for me being potentionally right or something.
That's a possibility. Of course, you could threaten to shut down the SRB2Wii project until it was completely finished, leaving many people with possibly unresponsive versions until the project's completion, as well as forever destroying any possible reputation that the flamers have or WOULD ever have. Besides, you COULD have been wrong and forever be marked an idiot. Of course, that would be an extreme.

Off-topic from this 3DS discussion, I can't get SRB2Wii to work :P

EDIT: Just noticed that I WAY overused "possible" in this post.

Comparing the Standard DS to the 3DS is like comparing the Gameboy Color to the Gameboy Advance. It's a new generation entirely.
