SRB1 Christmas (Sonic Robo Christmas Blast) is based on SRB2 TGF. So if that's what you mean by "better graphics version", you are actually playing the last 2D SRB game.

Yes it did. The original srb2 was in 2-D.
Then they turned it into the 3-D prospective. You can make your own 2-D levels or play Mario Koopa Blast act 2 and 3
