Sprite help???

Can someone give me tips to make good character wad sprites. I want to make good characters and thought editing help may help me. Things I want to know is how I should use the shading.

i can help, and i've been told im a good spriter.

1st) Dont pillow shade.
2nd) Second, start off small. Try doing small sprites first. This way you can learn thing the easy;
3rd) Try editing sonic3 sprites thats how i started.
