That's really odd. But I've already seen players which aren't part of any of the teams, playing on their own, but not as a spectator. Are you sure he was one?

Yeah, he was playing on his own. He wasn't exactly a spectator, but he wasn't part of a team so I considered him as a "playing spectator".

As for playing as a spectator, it just happened to me recently. I quickly hopped onto Fraps and recorded it in action. Not sure how it happened, but it was pretty fun while it lasted.

This is how it happened to me:
1. Join a match server and join in the game.
2. Have the host shut down the server
3. Do NOT quit SRB2, instead join a CTF server
4. SRB2 will think you're still playing in-game as if it were match but instead you become a player spectator instead.
