basic mapping is not that hard, in my opinion. Of course,
complicated stuff will take some time
The
SRB2Wiki has
a whole section dedicated to teaching most (if not all) things about mapping and level design! Perhaps you should try making those levels yourself.
But if you do, remember: always begin with the simple stuff and try to play around before getting to the real thing. Otherwise, you won't know how to progress.
As for the "16-bit elements", you can find lots of
assets you can use freely, ranging from textures to map objects. You might find there said elements.
Still, you're the one who decides if to wait or to do it yourself. And if you do decide to try creating the levels, I wish you lots of luck!
