Sonic Robo Blast 2 running on iPod 5th gen

Groove the Pelican

Gen-Z disco enjoyer.
I did it. I sorta got SRB2 on an iPod. Not an iPod Touch, a normal iPod.

Tutorial:
Step 1- Install Rockbox and rockdoom on your iPod.
Step 2- Install SRB2 demo 1 (from the olden days) on your PC.
Step 3- Take srb2.srb and rename it to srb2.wad.
Step 4- In a file browser, copy srb2.wad to .rockbox/doom/addons on your iPod (create /addons if it doesn't exist).
Step 5- Disconnect your iPod, boot it to Rockbox (should be automatic), navigate to plugins -> games -> doom -> addons -> srb2.wad
Step 6- Click play game

It's very broken and the controls are atrocious and it plays more like doom, and as far as I can tell, you can't jump, but it's still Sonic Robo Blast 2 on an iPod!

(Only tested on a iPod 5th gen, results on other devices may vary.)

Update: the second bridge in the first level is missing for some reason, so Greenflower act 1 is unfinishable.

2nd update: The crawlas shoot at you and you can shoot at them? Also this might work with a newer version of SRB2, I just picked the one that would be the closest to the original doom code.

3rd update: I tried using Final Demo 1.09.4 and it crashed. So I tried Demo 2, and because on the iPod the flowers act solid (and you can't jump) you're stuck at the beginning. Demo 1 is my recommended version.

4th update: I've realized the obvious: I've only got an early version of GFZ1 loaded as a level in Doom. I'll have to figure out how to change the game's engine, not just the stage/level. The age of "Can it run Doom?" is over! Let the age of "If it can run Doom, can it run Sonic Robo Blast 2?" begin!

I'm going to see if this works on a DSi via R4 card now.

5th update: I changed the instructions so that you don't have to delete anything.

Also I tried loading srb2.wad into the DS version of PrBoom as an addon, and it shows the menu and then crashes if you try to do anything. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Funny enough, a real DS Port of SRB2 does exist, but it never loaded to the title screen as it ran out of memory. Though I don't know if it has been tested with a DS memory expansion pack.

Ha! I got further then them! (JK JK they're way better than I am, I'm just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks.)
I'll have to try their port on my DSi which I think has more memory?

Update on the DS port, it doesn't work on DSi (In DSi mode, I made sure.)

6th? update: Some other bugs I should have mentioned: there's no water, it's the 3RD bridge that's missing (not the second), springs don't work, and there are weird platforms under most of the rings that weren't there in the original demo.

If this can work on an iPod 5th gen, it should also work on my 1st gen nano. I already have Rockbox and rockdoom on that one, so I'll update if I can get it running there.

Hm, when I first got it to work, instead of running SRB2.wad as an add-on, I replaced doomf.wad with it, maybe if you load the wad as a game and not an add-on? Also Rockdoom doesn't support music, so that's normal.

It would appear I'm about 13 years too late.
