Sonic CD is the most important to understand Sonic in general

That's cool and all but u should watch Evangelion
In my opinion Sonic CD is a great game. I don't think it's a game for begginers in Sonic, its level design is pretty weird (and that's the greatest issue of Sonic CD). But, when you get familiarized with Sonic's controls, the game becomes WAY more fun. Sonic CD is not a perfect game and it has some serious issues, but I still think it is the most important of all the Sonic games.

The first reason why I love Sonic CD so much is that speed is something that you earn, it's quite difficult to get it for free. Sonic 2 and S3K give you speed for free in certain sections of the game, S3K does it better because it balances perfectly speed sections and platforming ones, Sonic 2 is can be beaten super duper fast if you know which routes to take. In Sonic CD you have to investigate the places to know if you can go fast (and time travel), I personally find that really fun, but that's not the reason why I think Sonic CD is the most important game of the classic Sonic.

The main reason why I think that is because it's the best game that shows the relation between Sonic and Eggman. The whole theme of Sonic CD is nature vs machine, and it handles it perfectly. The 2 futures for each stage gives you reason to explore and time travel, the satisfaction you get to see the good future is awesome, and in the good future you also have the chance to go as fast as you want with no badniks on your way. Yes, I agree it takes a lot of time to go to the past and then go back to the present only then to go to the future, but it is possible to go to the future from the start if you get the time stones.

I also think Eggman is at his greatest in the classic games in CD. In Sonic 2 and S3K he never achieves his goal with the Death Egg, In CD he imprisons a freaking planet and depending on the ending he wins. He creates a machine that can truly match Sonic in speed and kidnaps an inocent girl. And the cherry on the top of it all is that Eggman has style, he is the king of 90's futurist Japan and I freaking love it. Each Zone is so stylish in all time periods, even Metallic Madness is cool. I've heard some people say that they don't care about saving Little Planet because it's so different from reality, but from my point of view this doesn't really matter because the futures give either a dystopian or utopian scenario, so you will get incentive if you see what Eggman does to Little Planet.

But the greatest reason why I love this game is its conclusion. In all the classic games the ending is the same: Sonic foils Eggman's plans by getting into his HQ and beating the shit out of his robot. In Sonic 1, 2, 3&K and Mania Sonic does nothing more than undo what Eggman did, that's different in CD. In CD Sonic doesn't just undo the bad future, he makes a good future, and the best part: using technology. The good futures in Sonic CD always have some technology in it, from Palmtree Panic to Metallic Madness. Sonic CD isn't a dicotomy of Nature good X Machine bad, it's the conciliation of these two world views. Sure, Eggman loses in the end, but his technology is used for good, it gives more layers to the story. It's the best game to understand Sonic's relation with Eggman.

In conclusion, I think Sonic CD is the best game to understand the characters of Sonic and Eggman, the main theme of the classic games and one of the most important parts of Sonic gameplay: exploration.

Even though Sonic CD is a game I love much, I'm not crazy to say it's the best Sonic game ever made. I think S3K is the best Sonic game ever made and a masterpiece in games of platforming in general (a title I can't give to Sonic CD). But I find Sonic CD better than the rest of the other games. It has excellent themes and conclusion, amazing style, iconic characters, and good gameplay and exploration.

Sonic CD is ironically one of the slowest Classic game in the series.

I think that Sega tried too much to emphasize on exploration it has gone against the gameplay.

The game is still beautiful and the time travel system was ambitious (4 versions of the same level are in the game).

I would've still loved to see a game centered around the OVA

If Sonic CD had a saving system like in S3K the time travel would have been much better

That's what frustrated me the most about it, I couldn't get the Time Stones in a legit way because of how the saving system of CD 2011 worked.

I think I said it once but if Whitehead could've redone the remaster with a level select upon completing the game, Knuckles, the chaos emeralds (probably after finishing the game once), Desert Dazzle and a true final boss it would be even better (while offering the "classic CD" option for those who prefers the original).

I like the ecological message behind the Sonic series and CD conveyed the message pretty wel but it has been abandonned pretty quickly (especially in Sonic 3&K).
