I know these are a natural consequence of the rendering engine, but my latest map seems to be pretty heavy with them, so much so that they are actually making the level unfairly hard to play. Is there any way to fix this?

If it's THAT BAD, try moving things in another thokbarier'd sector. it might help.

MIGHT

Otherwise...There's nothing you can do. Just pray a backup file is around.

I checked, and even going so far as to remove the thok barrier did nothing, so it was nothing wrong with that. I fixed the problem by removing all the ‘machines’ in the level (the machines are round and therefore have a lot of angled vertices). Now the slime trail is at a ‘healthy’ level.

This is why I support the return of openGL.

Slime trails tend to appear in really large rooms under software. In general you want to keep your rooms to a certain size in SRB2 because of this. Placing pillars in the center of exceptionally large rooms can occasionally fix this as well.
