ZX

Now 100% less jaded!
Unfortunately I've had to put Emerald Hill aside until I can get a good grasp of the thokbarrier for it (should've made the damn thing before I made the map... Grr!). However, in that level's absence, I have begun production on a new one, Shadow Hills. I'll get a few screenshots up later. Basically, it's a somewhat-CEZ themed map, high in the air (try 1400 units up for its ground base). My idea was to make a navigable map with plenty of unique ways to get around and to fight. It IS a Match/Tag map, too (as I seem to do so well at those ;P). By the time I finish it, it will have custom music, a very functional multiplayer basis, as well as a unique playing experience-- okay, I need to stop daydreaming now.

Beta 1 download available. Quite empty, not very full. Just getting the general layout of the map ready so I can put items, weapons, monitors, and some scenery in.
EDIT: Beta 2 is here. I added hills, a few more midair platforms, rings, and... LAVA!!! MUAHAHAHA!! >:] Yes, I know that the lava's color is too thin and that it coats the entire sector. Same goes for the water making the grass blue. But I dunno how to fix that. D: Halp?
DOUBLE EDIT LULZ:: I fixed the COLORMAP issue. It's all good now.

Edit [6/12/09]: The much anticipated (Lol yeah right...) Beta 3a is here!! I added some more scenery, edited a few things, and made a new secret area (that you should be able to find... NO HINTS!!!). Links below:

Screenshots! :D

Got some screenshots finally! :D

srb20011.png

Just one of four corner pillars with bridges.

srb20012.png

A floating platform and a small pool underneath it. (Cornershot)

srb20013.png

The top of the floating platform. Lolblue.

srb20014.png

Whoo. Don't wanna fall down there...

srb20015.png

A general screenshot of the layout of the level. Heh.

That's all for now. More to come (Dunno when). Stay tuned. :P

Well, you've got the basics down on how to make Floor-over-floors and texture maps to make them look nice. That's good. However, it seems to be a bit too open and empty from what I can see in those screenshots. You've essentially got an open plain, which is acceptable to a certain degree. But then there's the problem of there being no change in elevation in the map, save for a solitary pool in the center of the level.

Now, I just played it. I know it's a work in progress, but this is what I'd suggest you do:

1.Add rings. A match map is useless without them, so I'd suggest you add a healthy amount to give the player something to shoot with.

2.Expand the map. Nowhere to run, nowhere to run TO, no reason to run anywhere.

3.Flag those gargoyles. This can be done by right clicking in in SRB2 Doombuilder and checking the immovable checkbox.

Nothing else to report, as there isn't much to this map at all. Congrats all the same, though.

Um, about helpful hint #3, THANK YOU. I wanted to make them so that they could be immovable. Also, with my computer being a Netbook (Mini laptop), if I were to set it any bigger than 8168x8168, then I wouldn't be able to work with it because it'd be too big. But if I were to try, how big should it be...? And yes, Rings. I've put more in. Approximately... 48 more. And working still. I also added one powerup so far (I'm trying to think of strategic locations to place them in), and will add more platforms and whatnot. Anyways, thanks for the constructive criticism. :] Any other suggestions are more than welcome!
EDIT:: Uh-oh. Either my DB is a much older version, or I don't have that immovable checkbox (because I *don't* have that immovable checkbox).

If you have SRB2 Doombuilder v. 1.68(Don't really know if it matters or not), you should be able to see a box that says "non-pushable" in the things menu when you right click it.

Also, you can zoom in and out of your map by assigning them to appropriate buttons in the Configuration menu, just so you know.

Yep, I have DB1.68. But that non-pushable option doesn't exist. I have Easy, Medium, Hard, Deaf, Multiplayer, then all those bitsets...
And yeah, I know. XP
EDIT:: OH! It was the Deaf checkbox in this version! Now they are immobile. Thanks Django~

Gah! This level is so BLAND! Add more too it. Scenery at least. There is just nothing there.
Working on it... >.>
Just got back from my friend's house, so I'm updating it now.
Adding scenery, more items, and Rings (essentiality = much!).

Beta 2 Ready!

Mkay, so. Beta 2 is out.
Changed:
Bottomless pit: It's now lava. I thought that death was too harsh. xD
Main ground: I gave it a slow slant height. So it's not flat anymore.
More platforms: There are now 4 more accessible platforms in midair.
More scenery: Just threw a few bushes n' flowers in there. Not much yet.
Rings: WAY more rings than before. Nearly doubled I'd think...
Keep an eye out for Beta 3 (which will be the last before the final release)!

Heh, thanks. Basically, I will throw in more scenery, probably widen the area, add more rings/weapons and areas to go (Underground cave anyone? ;D). But, those are just rough ideas. Keep your eyes peeled.

I think the underground cave would be great and widening the area also good

Screenshots For Beta 2!

Beta 2 screenshots are here for those of you reluctant to download it before seeing how it looks. NOTE:: I got every Ring and used the God console command to see under the lava. Here they are:

srb20000.png

A view from one of 4 midair platforms, overlooking the other 3.

srb20001.png

A view of the middle platform while falling off of one higher-up platform.

srb20002.png

That little pool n the middle. I changed it to translucent and it's a nice blue.

srb20003q.png

This is what it looks like when you're falling over the edge... Into lava. >:]

srb20004m.png

This is what it looks like IN the lava.

srb20005.png

An overall view of the level from one of the four pillars.

There will be more to come (scenery, areas, path, etc etc). It's probably about 60%-70% done, so I've still a ways to go. I'm dividing time between this and my first SCR type level, so it may take a bit longer... But not by much. :] Thanks for your (I hope you have it... XD) patience!

Alright, this was not bad at all. A few ideas though:
Maybe add some more (Not a lot) of rings on the regular ground area.
Put some rings on the platforms way at the top.
Make the infinity ring a little easier to get. For some reason I had a real hard time getting it.
I didn't like the lava on the outside. Really, I've just never liked levels at all like that where you have a high chance of dieing because you are surrounded.

All in all it is a nice level. Plays okay and isn't bad. Just keep working on it.

Maybe you could put some springs to get into the higher platforms, perhaps some underwater, too? Overall, this level is pretty nice, and the lava-instead-of-bottomless-pit is amazing, too.

All right. I can do that. No sweat.
But uh, if I was to take out the lava, what'd go in?
I feel a bottomless pit is too harsh.

Maybe, you could put a floor and an invisible wall that leads to a secret passage, and on the floor, some springs.

If lava will be taken out, put slime instead, or make the lava a little lower.

Hey... That can work for my Secret Cave idea...
I'll lower the lava and put 4 platforms down there (if they don't screw up again), And make it so you can get back up with some Red Springs. The platforms will be sorta wide, with two springs on each end. You'll be able to access the secret cave from the middle of each platform, and it'll have a Bomb Ring in it, as well as several Rings leading up to it. But the platform the the Bomb Ring is on has lava under it, so if you misjump, oops! Lava below!
...Sound like a good idea?
EDIT:: I have a better idea. I can make the lava rise and fall. It will rise to 400 fracunits, then drop to 0 fracunits (200 below the ground where it'll rise and fall), and allow the characters to get in the cave system while it's down!... Lessee how bad I'll mess THIS one up... ._.;

I like it :) . Especially the Bomb Ring trap. Maybe you could have an Inferno Shield hidden, too.

Heh, yeah. You'd need it when you get back out, cuz the lava rises. :P
But uh, where should it go...?
There is an entrance to the cave on four sides.
The paths meet at the center.
The center has a little platform with the Bomb Ring.
HEY! I could make ONE path have a hidden cave off to the side with it in it! :D
EDIT:: Umm... Can someone tell me how to make the lava rise and fall?
._.;
