I don't see an option for saving on the escape menu

But you DO see "1 Player", in which you will see the option for saving.

Other than that, try pushing various keys in the F row. That is, I think F6 would be save. Maybe F5.

Ok, I got it to save and whoped Eggman's butt. Is this not the final game? All I got was the credits.

Sheesh. If your avatar is this big NOW, I'm glad I wasn't here to see it earlier. The rules clearly state that avatars should be 144x144 pixels or less. Oh, and you double posted. What fun!

No, not really; if anything, you made it BIGGER.

If so, it's a waste of time if it only has 3 zones. It's an amazing game though.

Eh, the final version's being worked on (supposedly...). In the mean time, just wait around, maybe dabble in level editing, engage in a multiplayer match, or better yet, start unlocking levels. You played the Mario stages yet? If not, get them.
