Roger Craig Smith appears to be moving on from voicing sonic.

I am nostalgic for Sonic's voice in the Adventure games (and for Robotnik's as well) but I prefer to play with the Japanese voices the most.

I would also point out that Sonic and Robotnik's current voices until now suited the cartoons better than the games imo.

Finally, I'd rather have Sonic & Co being mute (I can still tolerate Robotnik talking) overall.

I liked the current (previous? let's say most recent) voice cast in the most part, but with how recent games + the cartoon have been written, they've been starting to wear on me a bit. Roger's Sonic has gotten so obnoxious, so hearing Ben Schwartz play such an earnest version of him in the Movie was like a breath of fresh air. (And to say nothing of how off-the-mark Shadow and Rouge's most recent voices are.)

Roger was a great Sonic while he lasted, but maybe a change will end up being good. And it's starting to sound like he might not be the only cast member moving on too, so now I'm eager to see where Sonic goes next.

Amy’s actress announced that she is also leaving the series and Tails’ stated that she wouldn’t voice him in Prime although her role in the movie and the games are still in the air. Most other characters had already been recast for Team Sonic Racing, but (surprise surprise) Mike Pollock is the sole survivor here

I never really felt like Roger's take on Sonic was obnoxious, but I did feel like he was at his best when he was being more comical, and not at all when he was being serious. That naturally places him at his worst in Lost World and Forces, though I don't really feel like it's so much his fault as it is that of the writers.

Only if you know speak Japanese but almost people speak English !
Why that? Anyway I know that the scripts are slightly changed in english (so even the subtitles aren't accurate) so I've read a different, more accurate translation.

I don't speak fluently Japanese but I recognize the differences between the English and Japanese voices (the most obvious being the "Aw yeah, this is happenin!" becoming "*wistle* great, I'm feeling good!").

A sonic fan guy !
A lot of people like to play games with the Japanese voice using English Subtitles

In that case I wouldn't mind but I'm focusing on learning English at the moment and Japanese is not one of the language that I will learn it ! Idk maybe I will change my mind in the future LOL

In your case you are learning Japanese and improve your language skills ! Right ?

I knew about the TSR cast and heard about Amy's VA. I did not hear about Tails!

I really hope she stays on for at least the movie. I wouldn’t mind if she would get recast for the games if they ended up finding a suitable replacement, but for the sake of continuity, she’s gotta stay on for the movie.

I also heard that Ryan Drummond is trying to reach out to Sega so that he can start voicing Sonic again. It doesn’t really confirm anything because Sega might already have a new actor, but it’s really cool to see his interest in it

Sega should not just change the voice actors, they should also change writers and game designers

It’s already been stated that the writers are leaving and the game designers are doing good enough as is. The VA change is something that needs to happen at this point because we’ve had the same cast for 8-10 years now

I disagree, after Forces I cannot believe how amateurish the level design was (there were Generations mod that were more complex).

Also Mario didn't change his VA since '96 and it was fine.

The level design wasn’t the problem with Forces. Although it is mediocre, it still feels like a Sonic game and that means they got the job done. They just didn’t improve upon the formula, that’s it.

Mario is a completely different story. Sonic has dialogue in his games in order to reflect the tone of the story and the game. The Mario series doesn’t heavily focus on story and when it does, Mario speaks complete gibberish or stays silent. When a character is relegated to grunts and yells, they can keep his VA for a long time, especially when he’s the face of gaming. Sonic has an easily replicatible voice and he has full dialogue, which is why he needs new VAs every now and then

And now there's a reason why a group of fans wished he never had a voice (which is entirely understandable).

I disagree with this actually. Forces was an active step backwards in regards to the existing gameplay styles that returned; Classic and Boost. Aside from Classic's physics being way more jank than they already were in Generations, the level design is generally much more simplistic and doesn't really cater to the Classic philosophy of earning speed and maintaining it. Generations at least tried to fake it from time to time, Forces generally feels like the designers didn't know what they were doing or were being rushed.

Boost gameplay isn't really too terrible at first, but as you progress through the game the level design just gets worse, and it also gets really noticeable that the drift isn't in anymore. People often complained about Unleashed being "Boost to Win" back in the day, but aside from some sections where going too fast will run you off a cliff in the 3D sections that does actually tend to be a pretty apt phrase to describe Forces Boost gameplay. The physics are also janky, apparently the physics issues are because the physics engine is built off Lost World instead of Generations, but I don't know how true that is.

Physics, character control, and level design all work hand in hand in regards to the overall quality of a game's design, and all three of these aspects are worse than they were in Unleashed, Colors, and Generations. Even if the physics are actually built off Lost World, Lost World was going for an entirely different type of gameplay, and generally played just fine aside from the occasional parkour related problems.

Overall, I don't really think Forces deserves any slack for doing what is effectively the bare minimum to achieve what it set out for. It's a mediocre game, but painfully so, ranging from tedious to just boring. I actually get the feeling that most of the dev time was probably spent developing the Hedgehog Engine 2, which would explain why the overall product feels so rushed.

That’s basically what I was trying to say without writing an entire essay lol. The game designers were rushed to complete the game (having only a year to do it) while trying to juggle three different gameplay styles all at once. I don’t really see this as their fault since we know they have talent in making good levels (Unleashed, Colors, Generations, etc.). They obviously had a goal in Forces that they weren’t able to achieve and it’s made worse due to the fact that the story is absolute garbo and it’s hardly worth trying to get through.

I think the problem with the writing was that the writers normally create more comedic stories, which worked well in Colors and Lost World (Not saying they were good stories, just that it works for a nonserious narrative). They tried to write a more serious storyline for Forces but completely missed the mark by destroying previous narratives, number one example being Tails.

I see Lost World's story as more of an inbetween between Colors and Forces. It has some light hearted moments that would fit right in in Colors, but it also tries to go all grimdark like Forces as well. While many people criticize Lost World for this, I do actually think when things first start to get dark, they pull it off quite well. It does start to fall flat before long, but there is a genuine bit of anxiety for a little while there that I found quite impressive.

Something Colors, Generations, Lost World, and Forces did all have in common though was the stiff animation in cutscenes. We used to get really nice looking pre-rendered cutscenes back in the day such as in Shadow, Sonic 06, The Storybook series, Unleashed, etc. The games didn't only have cutscenes like that throughout their stories but they did use them more than they have been recently. It seems like the only cutscenes like that we have gotten recently like that are in the intro if we are lucky, or more likely just used in the trailer. Some better animations in the in-engine cutscenes would go a long way towards making the stories less tedious to sit through.

People hating on Boost games solely because of Forces are just too stubborn about wanting the Adventure style back... Colours and Generations are the perfect exemple that boost is the natural evolution for Sonic in 3D. Forces suffered from several problems and the boost is not one of them.

As for story, the games should not try getting grimdark, it doesn't fit Sonic that much.
