Generally, versions use 3 digits: [major version].[minor version].[hotfix version]
Example:
1.9.4
Increase hotfix versionif you make an update with only bugfixes.
Increase minor versionif you make an update that adds new stuff.
Increase major versionif you make an update that changes/upgrades the addon completely.
Take as an example of the major version... SRB2 itself! The first game (Sonic Robo Blast) is the v1. Then the sequel (Sonic Robo Blast 2) is the v2.
If you increase a version digit, you must reset all the digits at the right to 0!
Example:
If you increase the major version digit of 1.9.4, the update's version should be 2.0.0 .
If you increase the minor version digit of 1.9.4, the update's version should be 1.10.0 .
If you increase the hotfix version digit of 1.9.4, the update's version should be 1.9.5 .
no, srb2 isn’t v2 of srb1 at all. 2.0 was not the first version of srb2, it was the halloween 1998 demo, which iirc, didn’t have a version number at that point. for a better example, srb2kart is v1, and ring racers is v2.

The Final Demo versions were part of v1, too. v2 only came out with SRB2 2.0, as the game was "completed" then.
Yeah, 2.0, the version with Blue Mountain in it.
