Performance "bug" on Android 2.2.9?

Ok, so I had a previous thread about OpenGL not functioning for my Nvidia Shield. I ultimately concluded the Shield was just no longer compatible with the mode, which I only used due to performance tanking in Arid Canyon in Software mode anyways. (I prefer the look of Software mode regardless)

HOWEVER! I noticed an interesting discovery! (I think?)

When I attempted to play through Arid Canyon in Software mode I noticed that when I died, and respawned at the checkpoint the performance was restored to perfect framerates!

Normally Arid Canyon would drop down to the 8-10 range the further I went, but hitting RETRY/dying and respawning would boost the FPS back to 35 and then slowly drop as I continued the level again.

I managed to beat the stages by hitting retry every time I passed a checkpoint.

Is this a bug? or is it something inherent to the design of the game? I only noticed this in Arid Canyon since it was the only level that gave me unplayable framerates, but I am really curious now if something is going on under the hood that is causing the performance drop as you run through the stage. It's possible every stage does this, but Arid Canyon was the only noticeable one for me.

Any help or insight would be appreciated. I am just glad I found a somewhat workaround to playing through the game.

After some further testing with every stage I decided to look into split-screen. and bizarrely enough, this dropping of frames over time in Arid Canyon does not occur. The framerate stays consistent performing like I would expect it to during spilt-screen (25-35fps). Leading me to believe there indeed is something going on.

Though again, I don't have have the slightest clue to what could be causing this in Single Player.
