I can somewhat work around the problem by making the FOF's ceiling move down slowly, but then the objects on top immediately drop to the floor, which isn't great either.
Indeed they are related; Objects that don't move in any direction tend not to update their personal "floor" z height (aka mobj.floorz, for you Lua whizzes), so they don't realise they're not standing on anything anymore because they just don't check!
Hence these Objects in SRB2 are simply obeying one of the basic rules of cartoon physics, that "Any body suspended in space will remain in space until made aware of its situation": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartoon_physics
